The game is not black and white, but it certainly isn´t really colorful most of the time. Take a few screeshots and post them here to show what it looks like, since I at least haven´t heard of such before.

And of course first always try and verify the game cache ect.

its all dark black the tree and his hear r gowing white but it go to reger coloring for the movies

Yeah that's probably because you only have an integrated card in your computer. The cutscenes are pre-rendered, as in they're not rendered in the games engine, they're just movies. And when the actual game starts your computer most probably can't render it properly...

I downloaded Alan Wake last night started playing and have exactly the same problem you're having. Screenshot you took looks just like what I'm seeing. I have Intel HD graphics 4000 (1664 MB) on a brand new PC running on windows 8. Very disappointing!

I have Intel HD Graphics 4000 too, but my PC running on win 7. And there are only two colors: black and white

I didn't see any sort of warning on the Alan Wake system specifications before purchasing that an Intel HD 4000 integrated card can't run "atmospheric" games. My computer met and exceeded all of the recommended specifications with the slight exception of processing power:

Computer: Sony Vaio
Operating System: Windows 8 Pro 64Bit
Processor: Intel Core i7-3610qm CPU @ 2.3GHz
Installed Memory: 8GB
Hard Disk Space: 2TB
Display Device: Intel HD Graphics 4000 (DirectX 11) (latest drivers)
Display Device Memory: 1664 MB

Wouldn't you think this is enough to run a two year old game even at the lowest settings? I've seen it run fine on integrated graphics cards by Intel that preceded the 4000: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4RsewOKIUU

I'm sure the graphics put out by cards running the game that aren't "run of the mill" are quite impressive at 60fps but I just want to be able to play the game. I'd be glad to play it forced down to 640x480 between 20-30 fps if I had to!

Is there anyone that doesn't scoffingly write this off as a problem being an "inferior" graphics card who can suggest some possible solutions?

To the original poster and those having trouble with the Intel graphics chipsets. I know that this won't help you out now but just for future reference stay away from Intel graphics chipsets if you are going to do any kind of 3D gaming at all. I have been a gamer for upwards of 20 years and have built and serviced PCs for a few years now as well and during all of that time I have never seen Intel build a graphics chipset that handled 3D gaming graphics well at all. They make great CPUs but if you even think you will play 3D games I reccomend either AMD or nVidia waaaay over Intel graphics chipsets any day of the week including Sundays and all major holidays. :)

Basicaly what Hunter says, Integrated video is not for gameing.
Desk top or Laptops should be useing a seperate actual video card not integrated graphics.
Most video cards have their own memmory and are dedicated to rendering video games.

Integrated graphics are for , bussiness, browsing lightweight needs.
Or if your lucky they might run very OLD games.

If you are going to be gaming on a PC or Laptop I'de visit some websites and check out the specs and components so you know when you buy a laptop or desktop PC that you actualy have a powerfull videocard installed, not the barebones minimal use integrated graphics they put in non gaming PCs or laptops.

So having spent some time with this issue, I can say that it is a driver issue. I was trying to fix another graphics issue where water looked like a fireworks display, as well as some lights blacking out the screen. Updating the driver fixed the lighting and water issue, but left me with the same black and white texture problem.

Unfortunately, the current drivers for the Intel HD graphics family just don't work with Alan Wake, and their site does not have previous drivers (that did work with Alan Wake) available for download.

So I can play with good lighting and no textures, or roll back my drivers and play with proper textures and blinding lights.

Your (and my) only hope is to find outdated drivers on internet forums, which sounds exhausting to do that for one game.
