Alan Wake 2 jump scares: pro tip
Both Alan Wake games are the most fun I've had gaming in the past year (playing them both for the first time).

The jump scares in Alan Wake 2 were detracting from my enjoyment slightly, though. Alan Wake 1 doesn't have them. In Alan Wake 1, enemies attack suddenly, but the game mercifully goes into slow-mo for a moment so you can prepare for the fight.

Alan Wake 2 introduced horror flash / jump scares. At least they are not too frequent, but I still don't like them. After suffering through them for a while, I figured out that there is a setting allowing players to turn down the visual or audio intensity. So I turned down the audio intensity and now I am enjoying it way more. I still think the game would be better off without them, but at least they are not startling me anymore.

Jump scares are associated with commercialized, low quality horror movies. Given that Alan Wake 2 is a commercialized, low quality version of Alan Wake canon - it's unsurprising the game utilizes jump scares in an attempt to appear "more scary".

It's funny because psychological horror is typically known for being smarter, immersive, and atmospheric by avoiding jump scares.

As for the jump scares themselves, I remember giving a giant laugh every time they occurred, partly because my disbelief that they think it's a good idea to include them.

They're not even well done. It just randomly flashes "scary" faces on the screen. You have to try to come up with ideas this bad.
