Alan Wake

Alan Wake

The game pissed me off, but I don't want to give it up easily. So any tips?
Personally, I don't either hate or like Alan Wake himslef and his notorious moving speed reflected by others doesn't bother me much, after playing the heavy armored warrior class in TES Skyrim and the lonely wander in FO3. Can't judge much about the contents after only 3 hr play.

However, there are two brainless designs in the game really pissed me off. 1. ridiculously low ammo capacity. Unlike many similar games, 42 bullets is often all u can have early in the game and I have seen no sign of weapon upgrade so far. And u can't even keep the weapons and ammo found previosuly after running into another seamless scenario. 2. Virtually, the cross hair is non-existent. Also, u almost can't kill a foe without headshotting him. These two severe flaws pretty much guarantteed I ran out of ammo frequently far before having myself killed.

I found it less attractive than some of its competitors like Tomb Raider that also has interesting RPG elements like upgradable weapons, skill pts, etc. Once I was out of ammo, the death came. I tried dodging & running, which only delayed my death. Any tips so that I can kill these axemen without much difficulty? (just normal mode)

Well, the low ammo capacity and the fact that the game takes your weapons away every now and then are kind of important to the whole feeling of suspense. It's to prevent you from just hoarding equipment the whole game through, to keep you feeling vulnerable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But no, there won't be any weapon upgrades in this one. There are still a few new weapons/tools you'll be introduced to later, but you won't always have them either.

Headshots in this game don't do any more damage than any other. You can take them down by shooting them in the legs just as easily, so I'd always aim for their midsections (after driving the darkness off of them with the flashlight, of course).

Finally, any time you're having difficulty and you can see a light source nearby, you can run for it instead of trying to kill all the enemies. Practice dodging. Use your flashlight defensively by tapping the boost button when you have the reticle close to where the enemy is, it will stun them briefly buying you some time to take off running.

Don't know what to say about no crosshair. The flashlight's beam is your reticle. It does take some getting used to, particularly if you've grown accustomed to crosshairs in other shooters, but it's functional and I have faith that you'll get the hang of it if you don't give up!

Where are you in the game, exactly? Maybe someone can give you tips that are more specific to your location.

As Vic rightly mentioned, there is no damage localization in Alan Wake : whether you shoot in the foot or the head, damage dealt to enemies is the same.

I can't speak for the average player since I'm the kind who picks up every essential item (such as ammo) and I fire only when I'm sure I'll hit my target, but I never lacked anything at any given moment, whether it's ammo or flashlight batteries, neither in Alan Wake, nor in the DLCs, nor in American Nightmare, and I played in Nightmare.

If you shoot at enemies without getting rid of their protection first with your flashlight, then it's no wonder you're constantly out of ammo!

Regarding the absence of crosshair, the flashlight replaces it. You actually don't need a crosshair in Alan Wake since you'll spend mosf of your time in combat aiming at enemies with your flashlight to get rid of their protection. Besides, remember that the main character is supposed to be a writer, do you know a lot of writers knowing how to use a gun?

How can I tell the protection's gone once I put flashlight beam on them? I feel it only stops their attacks for a few seconds or so.
Do you remember the tutorial? You had to have done this once to get past it. You have to aim the flashlight at the Taken (boosting will speed the process, but it will also drain your battery so it's recommended that you only tap the boost button to stun the Taken unless you're in a difficult situation) and keep the light on them until they emit a brighter flash of light. It will stun them and they'll look a little different. THEN you can shoot them. On the easiest difficulty, most of them go down with one or two shots from the pistol. The big guys can take anywhere from 4 to 8 shots.
You've truly played this game completely wrong. As Vic 2.0 has said, light your flashlight on them (boost sometimes by holding down the right button) until they "explode" or whatever you want to call it, then shoot them. And well, the second part is with the flashlight, if you have the flashlight on them you'll hit them, and it doesnt matter where you hit them, just hit them.
