I just can't get into Alan Wake.
So far I've played about an hour of Alan Wake, and I just can't get into it. Does it ever get better?

No, it keeps getting worse. Drop it now, and don't come back to it.

Alright, thanks for the heads up.

lol Samael, I like your style :).

@thedrummer100
Well, it depends on what kind of games you like. Some people are looking for a first-person shooter in Alan Wake, while the game is not shooter-focused at all. As a consequence, they get quickly disappointed by the game, stop playing after a few hours because they're bored, then they end up in whining about the game being crap on Steam forums, while they were wrong in how they approached it in the first place.

Please keep in mind that Alan Wake is a psychologic thriller, which means it's a story-focused experience. If you're looking for something else, then you can only be disappointed. I played it for the story and I consider it to be one of the best games I've played on this matter in the last 10 years.

Well, I guess I might give it another shot. I'll see.

Well for someone to give a really helpful answer to that question, you'd have to tell us just why you think you can't get into it thus far. But I can say that I personally enjoyed almost every aspect of it and can only think of three true flaws:

1. The facial animations, particularly in cut scenes, are often unnatural and some may even find them distracting (though I didn't).
2. The game gives you too much ammo at times (though there are some who complain about the few moments you're not given "enough")
3. The driving physics (in those rare occasions you get to drive) are way off. It's really difficult to get used to the controls, the vehicle will sometimes hit nothing if you drive off the road and stop or slow down, and it's just generally not enjoyable to cruise around.

None of these issues hindered my enjoyment of the game overall, however. I found the combat satisfying, the story intriguing, and I especially enjoyed the atmosphere. It is true that models of Taken will continue to repeat throughout the game (so get used to them!) But it's not just them you'll be fighting the whole way through. And I appreciated the variety in the predicaments I found myself in despite this. Inventory, objectives, environments all change frequently. And the story gets pretty deep. Fans of the game like to discuss their different interpretations of several events and factoids about it, it's got some durability.

I've played the game seven times now, mostly for the combat and atmosphere. But yeah, like I said, without knowing what you don't like about it, it's impossible to say whether it will get "better".

The game is just so dark, and feels really bland. The whole 'shine your flashlight' thing just feels stupid. I don't know. I just had high expectations.

Based on this alone, I would probably say the game won't ever get better for you. The darkness is naturally going to be ever-present, as is the flashlight mechanic. Though there are predicaments and locations that aren't anywhere near as "bland" as the majority of what you've seen so far, two of the three things you don't like about the game are most certainly going to remain.

But if there's anything else (specifically) you'd like to know about concerning later episodes, just lemme know!

yes, it gets better

Hey, I liked it. It's not my on my top 5 list but it was enjoyable :) I like horror and am really waiting for the evil within now. Plus I like this concept of a interactive animated movie (not interactive movies like the old times)

Vic 2.0 is right ... however game mechanics aside and imo poor ending, I got hooked on the scare moments and the feeling of being vulnerable

I got the franchise bundle, is American Nightmare worth playing as well?
Vic 2.0 24 MAR 2014 a las 17:10
I enjoyed American Nightmare as well. Critics of the original have said that American Nightmare "fixes" the combat in a few ways (mostly adding more types of enemies and types of guns). The atmosphere is creepy with an isolated feel, like Alan Wake, but it's got a bit more color to it. Environments are cool but few and you have to revisit the same locations to a point where even fans of this spin-off complained about it.

You're still gonna be using the flashlight mechanic the whole game through. I would say American Nightmare is slightly less "bland" than Alan Wake, if only because the villain is... Well, I can't say. Let's just say lots of people liked the villain in American Nightmare more than the villain in Alan Wake.

The story is every bit as "confusing" as the original game, in my view. But I love both games, as well as the two DLCs that go with the original.

Lastly, there is an arcade mode in American Nightmare, for those who liked the combat (e.g., me).
