- the survival horror aspect is good, but the respawning enemies and bad inventory management (not to mention the very limited shoebox space...) makes it a chore to backtrack. Resident Evil games did this so much better, even the original ones.
- the graphics are really nice, the fog and rain effect, especially during the night time, and the street lights are quite pleasing, the colors and illumination are exquisite, but still I find it has unreasonable system requirements (RDR2 is a beautiful game which provides almost the same quality in graphics, but does it in an open world scenery, and with much lower demand in this aspect). Also, on a side note, the constant distortions, the blurring effect perpetually messing up your vision is very distracting and I dont really think the game benefits from it. It doesn't really add anything to the atmosphere and has a contradictory impact on the whole graphical fidelity.
- good story with some interesting twists, but then again, ends with a cliffhanger (I dont want to comment on the inclusion of Sweet Baby Inc., but lets just say: I'm not a fan, and never will be, wont be bowing down for your pandering. Let me remind you, this is one of the lines of Saga, the protagonist of the game called Alan Wake:
' Another white @sshole deciding what I get to do, how I get to do it. '
What an utter hogwash of a sh1tty racist character she is. Are Twitter/Reddit addicted activists are in charge of the dialogue writing? Stop lecturing people with your nonsensical woke ideologies, and leave gaming out of your appalling gender/race politics. And this is the best you can do? Cringe monologues? And you get money for this? Good grief...).
- challenging enough without being too difficult, a nice middle ground. But when you are forced to deal with 3-4 guys at the same time in forest areas, who are teleporting left and right and cant see anything because of the vegetation, your only chance is to spam dodge while listening to the sound ques of thrown hatches. And the game forces you to face these challenges, even though the shooting mechanics are not well equipped for that (rightfully so, since this is not Max Payne, you are not an action hero, in a survival horror game you are supposed to feel underpowered. But when the game combines this feeling with overwhelming amount of enemies to deal with simultaniously, that is questionable).
- very good atmosphere, with superb ambient music and sounds, BUT (and this is my biggest issue with it): the f.ckin' jumpscares. They are completeley out of place, and not fitting into the overall presentation of the game (long gone are the days, when Silent Hill 1-4 managed to scare the piss out of us without these very cheap attempts of jumpscares), and by the time you reach the nursing home, it becomes so frequent, it basically kills the games ambiance which it tried so hard to build up. Truly a let down.
- the end-game: oh boy, where to start. I really tried not to dislike this game, but unlike for example Control, where I have honestly enjoyed every single minute with it (first playthrough took me 60 hours), AW2 has really overstayed its welcome with its 30 hours, and by the end I grew so tired of the game, only finished it out of spite. The first time we had a chase sequence, okay fine, somewhat scary. Second time, meh, okay. Third time: come on guys, its wasn't really interesting in the first place. And by the end again running from Scratch in the Nursing Home, I just let out a sigh of desperation before turning off the game again for a couple of hours. I had to muster up my willpower to carry on with the game, and, you know, that is not a good sign. You are supposed to play games for entertainment, for fun. But AW2 was not fun at this point. But I do realize it's more on the preference side, so I'm not holding this part against the game.
- the bugs: ... I had bugs all over the place, flickering textures, memory leaking, map issues (after collecting all dolls the map showed the location of every doll, even though I have picked them all up, and writing on all of them were the "Father" figure, Words of Power marks remained on the map, even though I have collected them, etc etc.), but the worst was the Mind Place bug, which caused me quite some headache. I wasn't able to use Saga's flashlight to destroy the shadow orbs, restarted the game 4 times, tried everything, it pretty much was a game breaking bug, like half an hour before the end. So I had to watch ending on Youtube. Good job...? Not gonna lie, it left a bad impression. Especially because I've tried to collect all achievements, and only the ending achievement is missing now, but I cannot make myself reinstall the game to finish it, not knowing if the bug is still present.
Is this game a masterpiece? No, not by a long shot. Its a decent game, almost good, but as unfortunate it is, it has some very glaring issues and to be honest, the hype had a huge part in making this game a success. I really dont think that AW2 is a masterpiece, hell, in my opinion its not even Remedy's best game to begin with. It couldnt even hold Control's towel. Which is a pity, really, it had some shining moments (personally I loved the musical part and the mini Finnish movie bit in the cinema), and the facial animations are superb, I have never seen anything like this (for the most part, for the side characters, well, not so much...).
If you want to play a good survival horror game, go for RE2make, if you want it to be a bit more action oriented, Dead Space remaster or RE4, if you want to play with a game where the story is mysterious and convoluted, go for the original Silent Hill games or Evil Within. Again, AW2 is a decent game, but every aspect of it was done much much better in other games. I definitely won't be buying any DLCs for it, it was wasted money and time from my side, and I know it sounds harsh, again it's just an opinion, but nevertheless its better to just watch a walktrough of this game instead of playing it. Don't buy this game unless its on sale. There are only a handful of games, where I did not enjoy my time spending with, and finished it for the sole purpose of getting over with it. AW2 is sadly one of them. It did not deserv the praise it got during the Game Awards.
Doesn't really feel much like Alan Wake at all and tries to fool the audience into thinking it's smarter then it actually is.
Really would like to see Remedy get out of the slump it's currently in, might be an unpopular opinion but I wasn't the biggest fan of Control either but at least that had some interesting gameplay mechanics so mess around with. ALW2 is just devoid of everything imo.
Yeah the writing for AW2 is just all over the place, i'm sure there are many that are into that kind of stuff but it's just not for me. Also I was a really huge fan of the original game.
Might take your advice and replay AW1, it's been a few hours so probably overdue for one.
Sarumoon: criticism is not getting you banned, it's "someone" reporting your posts. Steam has a community guidelines, when someone reports the post, steam looks at it if any of the community guidelines were violated.
You understand who Odin and Tor are, right? Didn't you clock her mother's name? They could barely say it much louder. If you understand what they are, then Saga being a granddaughter of the most powerful one of them means... Yeah.
There's another famous games character whose only flaws are that he neglected his child and ruined things for his family, but I don't see people complaining.
It’s really jarring in such a realistic looking game. Where is the denial, the fear, the desire for a logical answer?
And I’m already tiered of backtracking through that damned forest!

I disliked Control as well. I rank Remedy games thusly:
1. Max Payne
2. Max Payne 2
3. Quantum Break
4. Alan Wake
5. Control
The first one was over hyped. I played it on Xbox and it didn't feel "7 years of development" good. It was alright, but not as good as Silent Hill 2. I'm sitting back to see if AW2 goes on sale, one day, for 20 bucks or something. I'll try it then. In the meantime, I was curious and thought I'd check out how AW2 is doing on here, but it isn't even on Steam! Interesting marketing move, I'd say. With how unplayable it is for people it should be on here quick time though. Making unplayable (poorly optimized/ overly demanding) games is a good way to shoot yourself in the foot. Look at what happened Immortals of Aveum. It's actually a pretty decent game, but the nature of UE5 alienates probably 85% of the gaming community. Control? However? Is Remedy's masterpiece and I think they should just focus on that title.
