Not a big fan of having to play half of the game as a different character other than the protagonist but I guess it was a necessary evil. The first game was 360 only title until 2019 so it never got a lot of exposure outside of the platform and lot of people ended up skipping it as a result. They would have to create a fresh pair of eyes to re-introduce the world of Alan Wake to new comers in a relatable fashion. Not sure if Saga was always part of the plan but it would be an easy win to have the lead character be a black female. Personally I would have preferred to play as Alex Casey as it would have had lent a slightly more personal outlook to the events than Saga seeing as how he was a character from Alan's other books.
This is incorrect. Alan Wake has been available on Steam since 2012, a couple years after it was released. There was that short period in 2016 where they had to remove it because of licensing issues which were quickly resolved.
1- Epic Games is the publisher of the game. They funded the development and marketing of the game.
2- There was no race swapping. The reality of what happened is that the Quantum Break video was nothing more than an easter egg video based on just a concept. The video was made in Finland on a very tiny budget, they literally used what ever motion capture actress they had on hand that day for that easter egg video. The easter egg video isn't cannon to the Alan Wake/Control shared universe at all. By the way, Finland is like 98% white, so of course the actress happened to be white. But if that day there happened to be a black actress there or an asian actress there they would have used that actress. They literally did not search out an actress to play this character, it was basically an after thought and they used who ever they had on hand that day. That is why there was no race swap, because of the reality of the situation, and because it was nothing more than a concept that hasn't even turned into a full fleshed out idea at the time.
3- Alan Wake doesn't take a back seat at all in the game, you play as him for about half of the game. Both Alan Wake and Saga are the heroes of story, though Saga wouldn't be able to do what she does without Alan Wake doing what he is doing.
Racism is solved by racism... sadly enough, it just depends on the currently accepted target lol. I'm starting to think it's just human nature at this point. While i don't dislike any particular race since i kind of just see all humans as a singular species, i do recognize the small differences within my species. So to notice a difference is perhaps a type of racism in itself i suppose lol.
My problem with Saga is that she is too perfectly equipped to solve things. She comes up with answers by playing out scenes to events in her head that she never witnessed or heard. Instead just creates this information in her head that ends up being correct. She as a character is more or less fine, but admittedly there is a heavy amount of plot armor surrounding her like an isekai reincarnation protagonist.
Perhaps if we played as her seperately in a game that just involved her as she was learning and honing her abilities in the beginning of her FBI career she would be a more respectable character. We are just put in her shoes with little to no knowledge of who she is and what she had to overcome to reach the point of this game. All while being perfectly suited for the absolutely crazy situation she finds herself in. If she were killed off only a few hours into the game i would have felt nothing.
Most of Saga's problems as a character revolve around the fact that she's a black woman in 2023, so the hapless devs suffering from white guilt need to dance around that fact every way they can, from nonsensical character developments to bewildering dialogue exchanges.
Compare that to properly written POC female character whose existence doesnt revolve around current day politics (Alyx Vance for example) and it's night and day in terms quality.
And no, seems like AW2 will be the only game in that situation since theres no more budget to bribe for more big AAA games. I'm glad Epic's console tactics failed.
The "white a hole" line couldn't possibly effect anyone's prejudices of course.
Despite the fact, as you said, she has white relatives so for her to use a generalized white racial slur doesn't really make any sense since white people are closely related to her. As well as the fact that that line is spoken from her "dark place" evil half making it seem like Saga has some sort of internalized hate against white people. I agree that I think Sam Lake is trolling the player on this matter but to say the player is solely responsible for getting upset over Saga being black is not to be presumed thanks in part to those kinds of lines.
She could have just said he was a crappy writer or something like that, since in the first game Alan's writing was insulted plenty without commenting on race. Yet there was only one moment race was brought up in the previous game which was during the dlc when Alan was trapped in the dark place. It may have been Alice's voice that said "white male drama" but it was really Alan criticizing himself as if Alan had some sort of internalized white guilt.
This hint of racism in the first game could be a tell-tale sign as to why Sam Lake bothered with this troll-ish behavior in the latest game since this white guilt might be something Sam feels himself, continuing the meta the game presents.
No need need to bring race into it and it wouldn't have detracted from the rest of the game either if that line didn't appear but here we are thanks to the devs.
You avoid the EGS client, sure, but in the end you're still giving Epic Games money since they're the publisher.
Okay then. Doesn't really lessen the fact you supported a terrible publisher known as Epic Games. A shame Remedy is terrible at picking a decent publisher, though.
