I hate collectibles in games
Especially when it is in a game like this. Nothing more immersion breaking than hearing a guy scream for help, but I'm like I gotta check behind this building first, then I gotta go check behind that tractor cause I just know there is a manuscript there.

I hope AW2 isn't like this.

Is it the coffee thermos? Wdym? Alan doesn't eat through the game, and he relies on his never-ending supply of coffee. :theskull:

You can always get them on your second run. There is no pressure to perfectly play this game on the 1st run. You also miss a lot on your first run because this game has many layers that a new player would not be aware of.

I love the "Alan Wake the writer overwriting on reality" thing the whole game has going on.

What an absolute banger of a game.
Yeah the coffee thermos and the manuscripts...but at least with the manuscript you get some story. Just hate collectibles in general I guess, feels like an artificial way to unnecessarily prolong a game.

I am absolutely with you! I hate collectible items or actions too, especially if its several hundreds in one game. Alan Wake has 324 of them as statistics shows. If I remember correctly, one part of the Tomb Raider series had over 1.000. When I'm trying to concentrate on the main story, I'm constantly distracted or feel like I'm missing something if I don't try to collect these things.

Why do game developers have to exaggerate and include something that is completely unnecessary like the thermos? I liked it as it was done in the Last of Us 1: There were 13 comic books spread over the world with blurbs commenting the story. This was fun! But why collecting 100 thermos and throwing over stacks of cans? This is so stupid.

They're good when they fit the story.
Manuscript pages fit the Alan Wake story and the games 100%
No game is 100% immersive.

I can't relate because I like collecting collectables. They offer me something additional to do, and they make it easier for me to enjoy myself in the environment.

I have to tell you that Control and Alan Wake 2 are not for you since as the story progresses, there are more and more collectables to find.

Collectibles can help promote a bit more exploration in the environment, so long as it's not overly tedious.

AW has probably the best excuse for looking for collectibles while someone is screaming, the plot is only going to move forward at the pace of his manuscript anyway...

First time playing its better to just go with the story and forget about completing 100% the game. That goes on the replay. I dont hate them, but I dont like the idea of more than, say, 10 items to find. American Nightmare did it a bit better.

Sorry for necroing but I just had to comment on the irony of how worse collectibles actually got in AW2, with "hidden words" as most obvious example.

Unlike the torch icons in AW, there is no clear indicative or clear invisible paint as to hint where they are.

In the occasion where there are arrows to find hidden words in AW2, they are often many and scattered from the actual immediate vicinity where the final collectible often is, unlike AW.
Searching for those with the flashlight on every single surface in the game is a complete killjoy and completely broke the flow and pacing of the game.

They also could not simply be ignored and had to be found since they impact the gameplay buffs and perks significantly.

I know people play differently but if you look through every little square of the map .. you find them all easily. I know it would be easier if people could have it marked on a map or something .. because I get it .. some people would prefer that ..

I just took my time through each area and went through everything .. it was always like a treasure hunt .. you never know where to look but you know there is something hidden somewhere :) ..
