The game came out in 2010 and speaking of which, the graphics are outstanding. I could go for hours talking about Alan Wake but what is the key aspect of this game is the fact that it's very heavy and rich on story. It's a game you might need to play through twice to get a good grip and understanding of it. People have said this about the game and I played it only to confirm - Alan Wake is not for everyone.
If you play games simply to wind off or to relax, there are FPS and MOBA games for that while Alan Wake requires concentration on the story. I really love plot twists, immersive atmosphere and interesting story in games and Alan Wake provided all of that.

If I were to summarize it then yes - Alan Wake is worth buying. Is it for anyone? Definitely not.
Perhaps it'd be better if you were to send me a friend request to further talk about the game, let me explain and answer all that you'd need. :Page:

For me the purchase was absolutely worth it and you are talking with someone who played through the story three times within 2 years. Something only the Legacy of Kain series and Tomb Raider II was able to.

The graphics are, like Sahrot wrote, for its age outstanding - the gameplay unique and the story incredibly deep. I loved every minute I was playing it, even at the most difficult parts.

If you have any questions about the game itself feel free to add me. ☺🎮

It really comes down to show that the greatest games have the greatest people playing it :OGOA:
I think it's a crossbreed between a console and a PC game, so in this sense it's a specific taste or feeling you'll probably get out of it, that is similar to perhaps other games of this nature. Other 3rd person 'shooters' hat are found equally on a Console and/or the PC; saying it's not a bad game because of this, on the contrary: it fits this type of game very well as it is a story driven experience (opposed to say, something like a complete open world, which this game in a sense resembles).

It has a very nice, attractive visual design and/or content which is aesthetically pleasing. I mean, I find the scenes at night breathtakingly beautiful. The game is a horror-ish, dark kind of experience and has a good sound to accompany or compliment this gameplay feature. Together with its story-line and narration sequences in between the gameplay, I was quite ''taken'' away by it. I like it and would recommend to try it out if you like games that are perhaps similar.... not that I could name any because this game takes elements from many popular games of the old school era (Resident-Evil mostly, so in this sense it reminds me of that game).

Overall content of the game in this sense is like a.. or an other third person shooter comparatively, only difference in gameplay now is how hat there is a bonus 'tactical' aspect added to the gameplay in form of a 'flashlight', which you have to use in combination with other weapons to take out the 'shadow-folk' the ''shadow-people'' or as they are called 'he Taken', so there is a story line to progress, which is very atmospheric in addition to the gameplay itself. (Story;) My main attraction to the game, together with the light/dark ''play''.

As I've stated it's a kind of horror-esque experience which can get under ones skin if or when playing at late hours but is nothing out of the ordinary in this sense that it's horrific.

Just overall a nice, smooth-controlling sort of comforting well looking; well made game which I love (lol).

I'd like to just, yet again, point out the fact that the game itself is worth buying, playing and investing time into but not for all. Considering you have 0-4 hours on 50% of your games (5 out of 10) and a vast majority of them aren't story-rich, you might wanna reconsider getting Alan Wake.

I don't mean to be invasive or anything but I wouldn't want you to be disappointed that it did not meet the expectations we gave you, that you made based upon our feedback.

I meant to say that Alan Wake brings satisfaction in exploring the story, going behind the scenes, reading up and discovering all that is not directly shown to you - it's about paying attention. And since you've mentioned it, Quantum Break (and also Max Payne) all take place in the same universe as Alan Wake does, you can see many, many references in Quantum Break related to Alan Wake, just thought I'd mention it, lol.
I'm trying to say that if one would be getting Alan Wake just to have some cheap fun of killing enemies and blasting things away, it would be pitty as the game concentrates on symbolism and hidden messages more. For more action and shooting there's a sequel called Alan Wake's American Nightmare. More of a 3rd person shooter game, with much greater variety of weapons, short story and an arcade mode - rather than a full game sequel, it's more of a DLC story.

Started playing it today (bought it 4 years ago during a sale or something).

I thought the game would be on the same level as Max Payne (quality-wise), with a good story, but am kinda disappointed. At first the game looks nice, but in cutscenes it really looks crappy (compared to Max Payne 3 for example). I got annoyed by the characters pretty fast as well. The gameplay is kinda annoying too.. First there's the camera angle, that isn't right behind the player (like in GTA games) but in an annoying sideway-position which causes me to run around like I'm drunk (constantly having to correct my path of where I accually want to go). And second, there's the monotonous 'shadow enemies' in the endless forest walks..

You see, you can't just point your gun and kill them.. No, you must first aim your flashlight at them, so the 'dark bulletproof shadow' around those enemies is destroyed, and then you can kill them with 3 hits. That's okay in the beginning, when there's only 2 or 3 of them at the same time. But it gets quite annoying when you encounter 5 of them, among them one bigger guy who is tougher and stronger (longer time needed to point your flashlight to him). All while the rest of them are slashing at you with their axes or throwing weapons.. And they aren't slow like zombies, but fast like you. So it's hard to outrun them. You can dodge them but you can't dodge 3 of them at the same time.. And then there's the ridiculously fast drain of the batteries of your flashlight. So 1) you have to aim a couple of seconds at an oncoming enemy.. 2) you have to kill that enemy.. 3) you have to recharge your battery.. 4) you have to reload your gun.. 5) you have to do all that while trying to dodge two or more other enemies... I really got frustrated when I got killed for the 7th or 10th time at a certain passage in Chapter Two, in a situation I just described. So I rage quitted and don't really feel like playing it soon again.

Too bad, because I love good storylines in games..

Oh, man. That's a pitty you didn't bite through it further because the story got better as I played through. But I can't disagree about the combat, it gets very repetitive and exhausting but the flashlight mechanic is alright in my view. The animation during cutscenes is indeed off when it comes to mouth movements, lol. Speaking about your experience with the game's combat, the DLC sequel Alan Wake's American Nightmare would really be a nightmare for you as it features arcade mode where you go againts hordes of enemies :steamhappy: Personally I didn't mind the combat at all tho, I was constantly thinking of the story due to manuscripts.
