Alan Wake

Alan wake the best game I have ever played in 16 years
What more can I say about this awesomely good, well acted, crafted and written digital art piece.
Unlike most other games in various genres, which are nothing substantiative but simply are carbon copies of each other, despite not being related....Alan Wake is simply original.

The creators inspiration from major authors such as Koontz and King is clear, however this does not infringe on the game's uniqueness and originality.

I would imagine that like most players when first playing the game, the author Stephen King comes to mind. the game starts of very well.Alan's nightmare, before waking up in Bright-Falls,
was to me very effective. From there the central narrative focus begins and the players is swept up in essense a living, breathing interactive novel, complete with the mysterious unsettling beauty of rural, wooded and mountainous rustic North America, interesting and complicated characters, and a frankly well crafted unique villian - the taken.

There is a sense of repetitiveness at times, but these are far and few between.

No other game has captured, me or held me interest as much as Alan Wake, It is in essense, probably one of only a couple of games that I have truly enjoyed from start to finish and through replaying. This is unlikely to change in the near future as well.

The novel- Alan Wake, which is based on this game is a very good read but is a novelisation of the game so gameplay comes before reading, in addition the two digital graphic novels - Psycho Thriller and Night Springs are very good.

The two DLCS, while frustrating at times are intriging and enjoyable to play and serve to tell of Alan Wake trapped in the Dark Place

I could say so much more, but I shall leave it there.

Overall I would award this game a 13/10 for all areas of the game.

Does anyone else agree.

I stumbled into this forum (after leaving a glowing review) looking to see if I was the only one blown away by this title. I had it in my backlog for years and kept overlooking it; I thought it was along the lines of jump-scares or the weird scares of games like Amnesia (which I did not like). Boy was I wrong.

Alan Wake quickly catapulted itself to the top echelon of my all-time favorite games, and I've been gaming since the 80s. I can't believe how damned good this game is, yet it's so easy to overlook. I loved the episodic feel -- the story felt like I was watching a netflix series. Every episode left on a hanger that had me begging to jump into the next one, when I really should go to bed.

And the terror... oh god, there were times I looked like I'd just left the gym, because I was genuinely sweating!

I think the single most important thing about this game that new players should know is to use a controller. This is a PC forum obviously, and I think a lot of the bad reviews have to do with the controls. Don't use mouse and keyboard for this one, it will feel wonky. Alan Wake was born and bred for a 360 controller.

Definitely. It's my first responding to a comment on Steam by I had to becauyse here in May of 2019 to your claim still stands. I just played through AW & AWAN + the DLC. I've done this multiple times over the years and I did it again this past week. One questions: do you know of any other games this rich in story and world-building? I've spent serious time in Rapture and Columbia (Bioshock + BSI) Raccoon City (Resident Evil) but am very open to any suggestions you might have for other horror-survival games. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have! :)
Hehe, google "games similar to alan wake" and you will find a few hundred games...that are nothing like Alan Wake. :-P

Sad to say, there is nothing like it. Some of the "similar to" lists mention early Silent Hill games, some mention Deadly Premonition (I haven't played that one), but I don't get nearly the same impression from those games as AW. Not even close. One mentioned The Evil Within 2, but I couldn't get through EW1 because I didn't care for it.

In my experience, nothing comes close to Alan Wake. It is just that unique.

Glad to see some new players to the game that find it amazing.

I have played it since release on PC back in 2012 or so, and I haven't had any issues with using the mouse and keyboard to play it.

Did you get to play the 2 DLCs (The Signal, and The Writer), and the stand-alone-ish American Nightmare?
Kornstalx 2019년 5월 10일 오전 11시 16분
I had just finished the second DLC (The Writer) like 20 minutes before I posted here. I have American Nightmare installed but am timid about playing it because I've read mixed things and don't want to sour this awesome taste the core game left me with.

I thought Nightmare was just as good. You should try it.

I especially liked the Observatory missions in American Nightmare, but they were all good.

oh my gosh. I have had this game backlogged for a long time. boy I am so glad I decided to finally play t. I am not finished yet but this is the best game I have played in a very long time. It really is a gem of a game. I recently decided to play my backlogged games with the recent Epic games fiasco and I am so glad I have started this game. Truly amazing. Its a shame that remedys control went exclusive. I would have bought it but now wont unless it comes to steam.

Don't forget about the extra DLCs, The Signal, and The Writer. It's a little weird how they tacked them on in the menus. You have to "go looking for them". I think they're in the Episodes part of the game menus when you first start the game. I think they get ulocked after you finish the game one time. It's a weird way to access them, imo, and I missed them 7 years ago for a couple of weeks until I saw someone post about them and I asked about them. And then of course, the follow-up expansion American Nightmare. Different, but just as good, imo.

Word of advice for when you finish: If you're like me and immediately felt depressed, like when you finish a great book, don't go out and start blindly buying other Remedy titles. I bought Quantum Break expecting the same quality as Alan Wake; boy was I surprised. I left a lengthy review of everything wrong with it.

Thanks for letting me know about the extra DLCs. I heard people talk about them too but would have probably missed them as well if you had not told me. Now I will be sure to do them once I finish the main game. I do have american nightmare to play as well. Have had both for a long time now. I am truly in love with this game. I love horror and this is better than alot of them I have played.

QB was pretty bad, I didn't care for it at all. Hopefully enough excitement will be generated over the AW TV series to make AW2 a reality... I can only hope.

I thought pretty much the same until AC Origins and AC Odyssey came out, but yes, it's my 3rd favorite of all time. That's saying a lot.

DP has been on my Wishlist on and off. It kept getting 90% off sales constantly, and by the time I'd go to get it (happened like 3 times) it would be off the sale again. Now... we are WAY overdue for a 90% off sale. It's gotta happen in the Summer Sale, right?
