Cutting Words and Reactions
So the way Cutting Words is changed is kind of interesting and possibly tells us something
about how some future reactions might work. The way it works now in BG3 is you target a character during your turn, and ALL of Cutting Words possible negative affects will apply on that character until your next turn. So in terms of the effect its a buff compared to RAW, in terms of your ability to time when to use it it's a nerf since you have to pre select the target on your turn. Overall I think it works out fairly well and remains useful for debuffing powerful enemies. This redesign of a reaction ability to me is a good solution as it gives you more to do on your turn since you can choose to spend a reaction, and it doesn't slow the combat down.

I'm thinking something similar could happen for Counterspell. Perhaps the level of the Cast level Counterspell will determine the amount of enemies you can pre-target with it or the number or level of the targets' spells you can stop based on the level of your Counterspell cast, and it'll counter those enemies' next spells automatically when they cast.

I'm glad they didn't go with the popup route that some keep asking for, because it would've actually been awful for Cutting Words (and for counterspell as well), as it would've given you a pause and a popup for every bard in the party EVERY single time any enemy attacked.

I know someone's gonna be mentioning Solasta at some point, please before you do think for one second about this scenario: your party has a Bard with Cutting Words and a Wizard with Counterspell. An enemy caster casts Scorching Ray. Tell me how many popups that would be RAW, considering the amount of rolls you can affect and the fact that it's a spell you could counterspell as well. The game would slow to a crawl.

I've said it before but a compromise needs to be made.

Having a reaction prompt pop up after every action (like you were playing yugioh) gets annoying real fast. However not being able to use reactions as a reaction also sucks as well.

Instead I think the game should go slow mo during something that could have a reaction be used and if the player clicks on the battlefield during that it pauses and opens up a reaction menu. If the player doesn't click the slowmo finishes and the move goes off. Give a slowmo length timer in the options menu. If the players never click the combat goes like it works right now but with the occasional slow mo. If the player clicks we get the proper reaction system. And with the option to change the length of the slowmo time we can properly give credence to people who want to go fast and people who are not twitch reflex players.
The fact that we didn't yet have this implemented in EA iny any shape as an experiment makes me think their actual engine does not allow us to act (get control) on someone else's turn. I don't think this was ever possible in DOS2.

There are some quite intricate reactions not in the game. Not sure if they will be in BG3:
You can move up to half your speed as a reaction when an enemy ends its turn within 5 feet of you. This movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks.
Or Divintation wizards ability to pick the die result before any roll actually happens.

We can hope Paladin brings a change, but smites aren't exactly reactions. AoO smites however are.

They have pop ups in Solasta and it works great. No need to reinvent the wheel here.
well i wouldn't call them great... But they are passable less crapy as one would think.

IF one would ask me before solasta i would say no way, pop up will sux now i'll say ok if there is nothing better i'll live with it.. But looking at this patch larian doesn't think the same...

The reaction system and holding action system of Solasta should be straight carbon copied into this game. The fact I can't hold melee attacks for when a creature moves in range of me is really strategically limiting.

Inorite? I don't understand what people don't get about this. So many games have used pop-up reactions before now, it's nothing new...

That said, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say...why not both? That's right, options baby! Make everything optional. Let people which way they'd prefer to play. It's literally the answer to every argument on this forum.
