Anyway, I loaded again later today and it had again eaten the experience again. On looking at the new experience after the "eating" all the three in the party (except Gale) had about the same XP as Gale was showing. There must be some bug in the XP modifier system that does not match the vanilla code. I had no other Mods installed that would interfere with the experience tracking.

because that shouldn't happen. you should be able to exceed level 12, and gain the spell slots for 7th 8th 9th.
also, make sure the mods you're using are compatible, preferably from the same author, i know theres lots of mods that increase exp and increase level cap, but from different authors, which can cause conflicts depending on how they coded it.
Alternatively, there's an Instant Level 12 mod, that reduces the XP cost for reaching each level down to 1 point each. So if you wanna test the level creep, you could try that.
