Also, I hope he has a really high Constitution and/or you respec him to be Fighter/Wizard. With a low Constitution, he won't be able to maintain concentration very well.
There is also an elixir of focus you can make that makes concentration checks easier until a long rest.
So far this has worked a lot better so the main takeaway was that I needed to prepare better whether that be through environmental hiding, elixirs, or various other methods.
Thanks.
If you have a Cleric (1lvl is enough, you can multiclass that if you want) you can cast sanctuary, to prevent enemies to target him in general before he did damage ~
you still have to mind AOE damage for concentration but that reduces them a lot
You can boost your concentration by adding more constitution to casters(imo have at least 16 con, the more the better), you can get proficiency in con saves by starting as Sorcerer or Fighter for example or taking the Feat resilient and choose Con, you can also take the warcaster feat to get advantage on concentration saves which is really good too
You can hide your Spellcasters with invisibility, darkness or similiar - or slow down enemies with different spells, so they cannot reach you easily, or blind them etc. etc.
You can cast shield on Gale as a reaction the first time he gets attacked and make enemies fail consecutive attacks way more with the +5 ac for the round
(in general boosting up your ac is a good choice too, there are a few ways to do so)
the easiest and most constant Solution i would suggest is the Boost concentration one.
Having a good Constitution and advantage on the saves is pretty darn good.
This will give you access to Sanctuary (1st level Cleric spell), and Sorcerer 5 will give you access to (twinned) Haste. As long as you don't directly attack anything you will be untargetable for up to 10 turns. You'd start off with twincast Haste as your action, followed up by a bonus action Sanctuary.
Waste of a feat.
Get the transmutation school, and create a "Constitution Transmuters Stone". This will give proficiency to con saving throws for whoever wears it.
An elixir of peerless focus will give your concentration saving throws advantage.
Mirror image is one of the best spells for defending a caster. It boosts the caster's AC by 9, making the AI almost never target you. When they DO target you, you're almost never hit. Shield is also really great for defending your caster.
Misty step is also fantastic for putting your mage in a very hard to hit area.
With this, And the War Caster feat, my mages never drop concentration on spells
from memory of 5e whenever you take damage while concentration you either need to roll a con save to beat 10 or the damage taken, whichever is higher.
So if someone hits you for 15 then you need to hit a 15 con save, and if your char only has 10 con that means you only have a 30% chance of succeeding.
movement is also separate from your actions and once haste is applied you dont need to remain close, so there is also the option of just getting the ♥♥♥♥ out as soon as you have cast haste, eg with misty step or just running.
It's half the damage taken, in 5e at least. I haven't really looked at the combat log to see if it's the same in bg3. But you'd need to take over 20 damage for it to be a DC of 11
