If they're all dead, then yeah, I'd say go for the shield. It's not good for the party if the cleric goes down, so maximizing her defense is a good strategy.
Also, there's a feat (Heavy Armor Master) which gives you 3 points of damage reduction while wearing heavy armor, as well as increasing your Strength score by 1.
Trickery is probably the worst domain in the game. I was never impressed by it in EA, even before Larian nerfed the 'stealth build' option by making Sneak cost a full action.
Indeed - I tried to do a proper stealth cleric build with her, aiming for the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate. But it's just not worth it as it is too situational. And her main job is healing & buffing - doesn't help if she is stealthing around somewhere in the enemy flanks.
I tend to give her the life or warpriest subclass.
1 for Shadowheart and the other for Lazael
