What class is best for summoning?

Title. I'm at the end of Act 2, and waiting for some more patches to fix up Act 3 before I move on, so I'm considering my second playthrough, which will be as the dark urge. With the Dark Urge I decided I wanted to be somewhat like Balthazar, and be a threat primarily because I have an entire horde around me to protect me. I want numbers, and if possible, also minions of high quality for this. So whats the best way to become the King of the Horde? Necromancer wizard? Beastmaster ranger? Spore Druid? A multiclass between different classes? I wanna become the boss essentially and have the enemy contend against my own army

wizard necromancer imo : start being able to summon undead at lvl 5, can have two at lvl 6+ buff, squeleton are good for range support, zombies are great in melee with swarm but a bit tricky to use

None. Summoners are bad in this game. But if you're going to summon, you do it with cleric. Animate weapon and Guardian of Faith are good spells.

Yeah, I made Gale a Conjurer, and he didn't get access to Minor Elemental until pretty far into the game.

Best choice for a 'minion' themed class would probably be the Beastmaster, since they get a pet at level 3, which continues to evolve as they level up.

Yeah, pretty much. Cleric is your best summoner and it's still nothing special.

Dang it. The Balthazar fight made me hopeful that playing a Necromancer or horde enemy would be strong. Dark Urge from what I've seen seems like they wont have very many friends or allies, so this was my counter. Maybe instead I'll have to go for a sorcerer or warlock.

The AI isn't dumb. They'll ignore the summons and target you. In the meantime summons do like no damage. So if they suck at meat-shielding AND they do no damage, why are you wasting action points on summons?

Isn't Animal Conjuring just straight up better than animate dead in this? That's what I heard, anyways so I can't speak for the authenticity of that. Just trying to add to the discourse.

If you're going for quests/story you dont want summons, trust me. Every NPC runs away, the summons block all pathing trying to get around, having to buff each one at a time by hand, etc. Summons are a complete nightmare mechanically speaking and aren't all that impressive damage wise late game (most die before they can get any kind of damage going.)

Okay, so I thought this was only like, a theory from before release, is Dark Urge actually a Bhaalspawn? Same as Sarevok and all that?

Look at it this way, you can either cast a single little minion, that is able to do, 5-10 damage to an enemy, if he even hits with a mostly lower then 40% chance, or, throw a fireball into your enemies, that does 20-40 damage to an entire group of enemies.
