Am I cheating myself by savescumming?
Part of me feels like I'm losing something by loading whenever a check I really want to succeed fails. Kind of feels like I'm deliberately dodging the point of the die role system.

Yes.

By save scumming you aren't playing an rpg

You mean, how you have to justify your own savescumming by pretending other people are doing it, regardless of what they say? Sounds like you've got a real inferiority complex, dude.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ David Copperfield over here, can you also guess my astral sign and saw women in half or do you have other means to show you took that very personally for, clearly, no reason at all, winky face

I would say no, you miss out a lot of flavour this way.
And since many folks are not really familiar with the 5th edition rules, and especially with Larian version of 5th edition rules, it is normal to save scum.
(Dunno i run into a DC 30 disarm trap on level 3 but i find DC 10 traps on level 7. I get a 25 DC something check on level 4, but i get a DC 21 check on level 7:D)

I actually most often save scum, to see what history, religion and such rolls i miss out during a dialogue. I just want to see what kinda flavour text they added.
Also i often repeat my own battles, because i want to try out something. I keep the savegame where i already won, and try out the new tactic because perhaps it works better or worse, or can be used later:)

So yeah i am an ardent save scummer:)

nope. this is how this studio designs their games, its meant for save scum

i was hoping it would be different this time, but its not, and of course im way past the 2 hours mark so i cant refund it. their design philosophy is reload 10000 times until you know every nook inch and cranny of the game. then youre ready for your first play through.

just play on easy mode. "normal" mode is just BS mode and i dont have the patience or energy at this age to loser out on a game anymore. im guessing you dont have the patience either

Save scumming is self cheating and can lead to boring game play. It also reduce replay value of the game because you will be missing a content. IMHO. But nothing prevents you from using it.
I personally use it only if the game crush, or like when I lose UI and the game can not proseed (a bug). And I am forsed to do it. Party wipe.
But I don´t use it to gain different outcome. I use inspiration sometimes, because that is what inspiration is mean to be used for. But I also know that it is limited sourse and if i use inspiration here. I can not use it later in another situation. So using i has consequences.

And that is what BG3 is about. Things has consequences and you can see wery different outcomes and situation based what you have done before and that is good and fun.
The Gale did die in this time. Gale helped me win the game this time. Gale did ruin my game this time. Most of that could be impossible if I would save scum. I don´t wanna lose that and also don´t wanna make my game boring.

outcomes do not change much if you fail or not why fail at all?
you missing a lot of content if you fail rolls because of it.

I really wish the answer to this was more obvious to me. For now I feel listless

I've heard really good arguments from people who feel strongly on each side of the discussion and I agree with almost everyone.

No. There are times when I feel something is real key and simply because of a poor dice roll, you're meant to take a much harder road when you'll achieve just as much XP/Loot/Information if you were to pass it. Save scum all the way, bro.

Play the game how you want. Who cares if you're cheating? It's a coop/single player game.

Sorry, 'cheating' may have been the wrong terminology. I feel like, by savescumming, I have inadvertently bypassed deliberate gameplay mechanics that were designed for a more enjoyable experience. Like eating popcorn without the salt.

From the sounds of it, you're overthinking it. Just save scum to your heart's content. No one cares.

Random User #223452 isn't going to wake up in a cold sweat know you're hitting Quick Save + Quick Load on your playthrough.

I'm not losing sleep over it if that's what you're thinking. There seem to be clear divides on this subject and I'm torn. I really want to feel strongly one way or the other but I'm apathetic, which is what I'm hoping to resolve here.

You should try NOT savescumming for ONE day, and see if you like it.
You can always revert to a backup save if things start to get frustrating or boring. Doing it over won't feel like you're repeating the entire last day's session, because the gameplay will turn out completely different.

I went straight shot, for my current paladin playthrough, and things got very interesting. Instead of persuading and intimidating my way to victory at every turn, I got to purge a whole bunch of filthy heretics and claim piles of shiny loot I otherwise would have gone without. Also, did some righteous time in jail after saving an innocent soul from mean locals. Worth it! Infidel scum.

There's stuff in the game I didn't get, and didn't see, and I can't wait to roll another character and try the paths I missed out on!
I've effectively given myself hundreds of more hours of enjoyment out of the game in the future.

As a bonus: The let's plays on youtube are more fun now, because my path is completely unique to theirs. In general, they go to the same places, but man does it turn out wildly different.
