... but if you're looking for damage in a 5e game, you probably don't want a caster to deal it. The other classes are much better at it and don't depend on saving throws. I know it seems like hitting 15 goblins with a fireball sounds amazing but you'll never ever see 15 goblins lumped tight enough to actually do it. Martials win the damage competition hands down. Oh, and Warlocks.
But if you want a caster for what they're actually good at doing, the wizard is the best because you can swap your spells around before every fight depending on what enemies you're facing while saving space for things like Feather Fall or Knock without consuming a combat slot.
They have access to the same spell list but they have class features that differ. Wizards for example can benefit from specialization, and sorcerers have access to metamagic feats (probably also bloodline abilities, but I'm not sure).
Nay, Wizards are people who acquired magic through a life time of study and practice.
Sorcerers are people who have an innate talent for magic, because they are descended from some kind of powerful, magical creature. Most commonly believed to be a dragon.
so wizards are the OG stereotype and sorcerers are the anime protagonist.
Also, Wizards have the ability to specialize in a specific school of magic, getting special class features related to it.
Sorcerers can't specialize in a school, but they get class features related to the source of their magical origin.
For me a dead enemy is better than an incapacitated one so yeah, sorc no brainer.
Mind Flayer can't eat brains from a corpse. Brain Extraction only works on enemies who are incapacitated. ;-)
I could also set my melee chac to non lethal damage :P.
I prefer doing that bit of damage to an enemy with my sorc than to roll a die and put it up for chance whether they will get incapacitated.
You mean your melee character who now has 13 Strength, and 12 Dexterity?
Good luck with that!
You're really not going to get massive, sustained damage numbers out of either class. Casters in DnD aren't single target damage specialists. They can do it on limited occasions, but nothing is going to beat martials in sustained damage. In BG3, a hasted level 11 fighter with a +2 Greatsword and Great Weapon Mastery is pumping out a potential 12d6+102 damage every round. The best single target Wizard spell is Disintegrate, at 10d6+40 damage. Sorcerers can play a bit harder thanks to metamagic giving them the ability to twin and quicken spells, but they're still not amazing at killing a single target.
The uses for a caster are largely in control, multi-target damage, and utility. Access to Haste or Fly for your party, Counterspells to neutralize enemy casters, Fireballs or Chain Lightning to eliminate groups, Web or Walls to lock multiple enemies down at a time. These are the things casters excel at.
Heh, i've just started a game with 4 Wizards as a second game for when i want a break from the first.
I've done the 4 fighters in Solasta and i've done 4 Rangers in BG3 EA.
