The corpse does not respond
I had really hoped this would have been changed for release, where it would tell you if the corpse was talkable or not. as it's such a stupid waste.

Naturally most people will just save before using such a limited spell. making it pointless to even have such a restriction.

There is an indication for it as the corpses that you can talk to will sort of flicker with a green-ish color

Early in Chapter I you find an amulet with the spell to talk with corpses. Once cast, the ability remains until rest.

Some folks are casting it via scrolls, rather than as a known ritual spell or with the amulet.

The scroll works the same way, though. It lets you recast the spell as much as you want until you take a long rest.
Oh, does it? Didn't realize that; I only ever have used the amulet. Neat.

Then yeah, I think folks are probably just not seeing where the recast button is, since it's in a different place.

Yeah, by the time you get to Baldur's Gate, your hot bars gets pretty cluttered with all the special attacks, spells and items you're carrying around.

No the ability didn’t remain for me. It would be wasted if the “corpse does not respond”.

How is it a waste? You can recast it for free. Also once its cast it highlights anyone you can talk to. A disguise self will let you talk to people you murder as well.

Check your hot bar on the very far right. There should be an icon for recasting Speak With Dead.

Ritual Spells like Speak With Dead, Find Familiar, Speak With Animals, and Detect Thoughts all have a duration that lasts until long rest, and can be cast for free as many times as you want.

Oh thanks. Good to know. Have been wasting time loading and reloading.

I think the funniest I got was
"The corpse doesn't want to talk to the one who murdered it."

Which has some serious ramifications for those who choose to specialize in Necromancy.

Imagine you devote your entire life to the pursuit of mastering the undead, only for them to refuse to follow orders because they don't like you?

The amulet's recast power causes the green glow. You're on your own otherwise. This is by design.

If you have any desire to speak with the dead without a living person prompting you to talk to someone specific, go get the amulet and, first thing after every long rest, cast the amulet's Speak with Dead on some rando corpse (not a prepared spell or scroll). It'll turn on the green glow and recast ability, and it doesn't use a spell slot or scroll.

EDIT: Most of the dead my party has killed still spoke to the party if my party left the region and returned. I asked one of the corpses the question of who killed it, and it shouted, "You! May you [some vague death wish I can't remember]!" but it continued to answer my remaining two questions all the same.

It doesn't use a spell slot regardless if you use the amulet.

Ritual Spells work like Cantrips in the sense that they do not cost a spell slot. You can cast them an infinite number of times.

The Amulet is just there for if you want to have Speak With Dead on a class that normally wouldn't get access to it.
