It's more akin to an Eldritch Knight, but instead of being a fighter with high intelligence, it’s a wizard with a focus on their melee weapon.
Much more interesting, imo, and I’m looking forward to the drop of P8.
It's also an excellent 2 level dip for an EK.
Carrying a Charge Blade arounds needs some sort of magic... wait... different game
If you don't like the class, don't use it.
I rarely play Clerics and have never used a Monk.

Lol. My best way to deal with Gale is to leave him in the unstable portal. If I want a wizard in my party, I will use a much less annoying char.
But on topic, I have zero interest in this sub class. If I want a melee caster, I will stick with a cleric or EK.
