Long Rest Cutscenes
Did I mess up? I'm at the end of Act 2 and I barely used long rests. I didn't see a point in using them when short rests exist and I have multiple party members. Whenever someone went below half health, I swapped them out with someone else and used potions for myself. When everyone was below half health, I used a short rest.

I did progress a bit into Act 3, did the love test, and there was a conversation with Gale that was along the lines of, "Do you regret us not starting anything?" When I saw that, I knew I wasn't in a relationship with him and reloaded to the end of Act 2. I used long rests as long as I could, got the Rapheal scene with Astarion, got the owlbear and the 2 cutscenes that followed, but no Gale relationship.

If youre playing solo and dont use a lot of potions imo you can rest after every fight to not miss a lot of content. Alternatevly, there is a mod that shows a notification above party members head when they have some dialogue in the camp during/after long rest.

I guess I'll just romance Halsin and go after Gale in another file. Thanks guys. I was really hoping it wasn't the case, but I'll know for next time

You can also spam partial long rests without using supplies to exhaust any long rest dialogue.

Half of my camp dumped me at the start of act 3. Game does very little to encourage long rests.

I found out I'm locked out of romancing Halsin. I'm just gonna start over and just try using long rests more.

You don't need to rest at all, swapping people is one way, throwing potions healing all 4 of you can keep you topped off, respecs can mostly heal you and may even restore spells, etc.
But in spite of the game encouraging you to avoid rests, you should rest 6, maybe even 10 times in act 1 alone to see all the content.

Good to know

did the same mistake on my first play through
you should still finish this current game before restarting since insomnia has no effect on your ending beside who will stand next to you (if u failed to romance anyone).

on your next play through, rest, again and again, until your nights are uneventful. then move on, maybe of them give context to many things and change the outcome of your companions so even the same party could be shown in a completely new light.

Long rests progress the romance/Companion, If you skip them you skip the story.

You can use ”Partial rest” if you don’t want to use resources, These still trigger scenes.

Consider it a blessing.

Yes, there is a lot of character interactions which are prompted by Long Rests, especially among The Dark Urge.

If you're playing Gale, you can get a unique Ring of Evasion from a friend, which is not otherwise available on any other playthrough.

Long resting with Wyll after you've either killed or recruited Karlach results in a meeting with Mizora, which has different outcomes depending on how you acted.

If you're playing as Astarion, long resting triggers cutscenes where he experiments with the limits of his newfound freedom from Cazador.

Long Resting also causes merchants to restock their supplies. With some quests even causing them to update to better gear.

------------------

There is good news and bad news regarding this.

The Bad News is that you only get 1 cutscene at a time, and there are so many cutscenes to go around, that triggering them all is almost impossible.

The Good News is that you don't need to take a full Long Rest to achieve this. Even if you only do a partial full rest (that's Long Resting without using any camping supplies), it will still advance the game.

SO, if you want to trigger all the scenes properly, you can just spam partial long rests until everything is triggered, then resume the game as normal.

only problem with that is when you use short rest heavy parties. like my party is laezel, wyll, shadowheart, and a shadow monk. and we finish most encounters and quick and just short rest every so often if we must
