How to steal the sacred idol?
So I've investigated and exposed Korgha. But nothing I do will let me steal the idol without getting caught.

Things I've tried:
Darkness and/or cloud. (Outright doesn't work).
Invisibility (gets disabled the instant I try to steal it).
Mage hand (Says it can't get to idol, or can't throw it - even right on the ground)
Performances to distract (still get caught)

At this point is seems like there is no way to steal it without getting caught. Any help?

Cast the Fog Cloud directly on the character who will be stealing the idol and then hide and steal. It should work fine if you do the direct cast. It took me a few failures to realize this is how to do it consistently.

Same trick works for poisoning the Goblin Camp's drinks, if you can't get their vision cones to stop detecting you.

You can steal it even after killing goblin leaders, before NPCs move to your camp. You can talk Mol to turn in idol during that time.

For some reason, Mol won't take the idol after the druids have been provoked into attack. Even if the druids die and tieflings survive, you still can't turn it in. Very frustrating, because it seems like you have to complete the Kagha investigation, convince the druids the tieflings don't deserve to be tossed out, THEN you steal the holy idol and give it to a bunch of orphaned pick pockets.

I mean, that's just straight up Chaotic Neutral, right there.

You could also just... NOT do that. It's entirely your choice.

You had to actually have quest to steal Idol before you kill Goblin leaders active. Mol wants you steal idol as revenge, but they no longer have need for revenge if you manage to save refugees, but Mol still does respect quest completion, but will not grant quest anymore (to start it).

Lae'zel's invisible mage hand is pretty good for this, but you first have to fly up onto the pedestal itself before you attempt to throw it.

originally i did the mage hand trick, it angers the druids TOWARDS THE MAGE HAND, not you, so its funny to me... originally you could just grab it and throw it with the mage hand...

coming back to try over with new mods... seems they've made it so the mage hand can't 'throw' the idol straight up... this annoyed me... so after Khaga's thing being finished, i was debating what to do here since mage hand couldn't just chuck it... well... you can 'shove' it, apparently, still... so i have the mage hand 'shove' it then go over to wherever it winds up and can 'throw' it like normal, somewhere out of the way, and just have astorian grab it while sneaking then send him to the camp immediately. Seeing as my 'party' doesn't have it on them, i have no issues with the authorities when they're squirreling around for who 'stole' it, and just hand it off to the kid...

i did notice that since the last time i did it, Mol holds onto the statue. Before, after you gave it to Mol for her quest, she'd IMMEDIATELY go and put it in the chest and you could just steal it again. She KINDOF doesn't care, and would make a comment about you stealing it and giving respect where its due~ now coming back, it seems she holds on to it, so using a summoned kitty the kids are distracted and have Astorian do his snatch and dip back to the camp trick again. I was kind of disappointed Mol didn't do the 'wink wink nudge nudge' dialogue anymore, but that's how i get those quests done and get to keep the statue for its nature buff...

I mean... I just grab it as Astarion, start a fight, and then dash the heck out of there. Rogue Thief = 3 dashes per turn, so good luck to anyone trying to outrun him.

I never had an NPC spawned out of nothing ever as a consequence of such an action. Throughout the game.
Guard NPCs spawn out of nowhere frequently if you are caught stealing.

warning: if you steal it at the wrong point in the story, the grove explodes into war between druids and tieflings and a great many people who you might find useful in later acts all go belly up.

It still counts as stolen.

But yeah, basically you can only steal it after the druids do not use it anymore for their ritual.
not really, one time I stole it right after I entered the grove for mol.

I did it once with stealth and using invisibility potion. With many attempts didn't seem like was even worth it. So never bothered to do it again.

That is understandable. But usually there are not enough NPCs to cover the area to catch you stealing to begin with. In this specific case I have never had any issues with performance or casting minor illusion.

I think of it as a timewaster, considering the reward/efforts ratio.
