Would I have preferred 5E Sun Soul, Ascendant Dragon, or Kensei? Sure. Can I get them now at mod.io. As of yesterday, yeah. (I do find the basic Kensei a bit boring, but once again I'm finding this homebrew take called the Ki Duellist a lot more tasty. This other one called the Way of Steel is just weird, it randomly gets weapon actions that don't match the weapon it's using, this doesn't make sense.)
Technically none of the classes are homebrew. But they didn't really tell anyone much about what the classes do other than what nonsensical gimmicks they added for homebrew.
oh... didn't realise there is one in Xanathar (also partly because when i read the developer notes they mentioned homebrew).
was just thinking where monk keep getting special treatment lol
Because their Monk is already pretty homebrewed, and their take on classes overall is fairly homebrewed.
I was hoping for Sun Soul, as the Monk is terribly starved for ranged combat. I don't consider Four Elements to be a good option, because their Ki pool is too small during the early game to make it viable in ranged.
As much as I want to say I'm eager to try out the Drunken Master, I honestly don't know how much use I'll get out of it. I don't think I've ever even ♥♥♥♥♥♥ drunk before on any previous playthroughs. I just used alcohol as a camp supply and that was it.
monk don't really need range option because they have good movement speed, but i think if you do open hand monk, you can easily just throw weapons.
Throwing weapons requires ammo. From what I understand of the Sun Soul, they get a ki blast projectile as a basic attack. If it costs ki points to use, I don't remember finding any rules stating as such.
And Monk, Ranger and Rogue are homebrewed to the extent they are because they're very weak compared to the other classes in the 5e rules. Those three are pretty much always at the bottom of everyone's list of 5e classes in my experience. The Rogue still isn't that good outside the extra bonus action, but they did a decent job with Monk and Ranger at least.
Bladesinger + Drunken Master = rly high unarmored AC and LOTS of movement!
Well, conceptually speaking, a Rogue isn't supposed to be a proficient Martial combatant. Their sub classes are Thief, Assassin and Arcane Trickster.
What does a Thief do? Uses stealth and misdirection to pilfer goods and escape without being caught.
What does an Assassin do? Kills people for money. Their job isn't to challenge the enemy to honorable combat. Their job is to get in, do the deed, and get out for help arrives.
What does an Arcane Trickster do? Uses magic to harass and confuse their victims before... doing whatever it is they had planned.
--------------
The rogue is a stealth operative. If you get pulled into a lengthy, open conflict, then you've botched the job.
Have a look at how pf2e's Rogue is done for what I think is a Rogue class done right- they're still incredible skill-monkeys capable of stealth, trickery, and deception but they can also hold their own in a fight if it comes to that. They handle very differently than a Fighter, and they're much less durable, but a well-played rogue can absolutely contribute a lot to a fight.
That's why you utilize Flanking maneuvers, by attacking enemies who are already engaged with another party member. They keep the enemy's attention, while you sneak up from behind and shank them.
