Is there any sort of battlemage type class?
Im wanting to start up again after not playing since launch. I have played Pathfinder WOTR, and have a semi decent spellblade. Im looking for a build that utilizes maybe a quarterstaff with some spells. ANyone help me out?

Kind of?

Arcane Spell Failure Penalty doesn't exist in 5th edition, as long as you're proficient in the armor you're wearing. So if you want your wizards to run around in full plate, you're free to do so. The downside is you may have to waste 1 or 2 of the game's 3 Feat selections in order to take the appropriate armor proficiency.

Alternatively, there is the Eldritch Knight sub-class for the Fighter that can be taken at level 3. But as it is a hybrid caster, you won't get very many spells compared to the dedicated casters.

not officially but you could dual class a fighter and warlock/wizard/sorcerer to create a battle mage

I will check out the eldritch knight. I didn't know that about the spell failure penalty not existing, that makes things a bit easier

Yeah, took me a while to adjust to it too. In fact, even now I instinctively keep my spell casters in robes, instead of giving them something more durable. Simply because that's the way the video games worked for so many decades.

there eldritch knight subclass and a tempest cleric with heavy armor also works well if you want a more magic based battlemage

You best bet for raw power is 2 levels of Vengeance/Oathbreaker Paladin and 10 levels of Sword Bard. You’ll have smites, you’ll have spells, you’ll have high AC, you’ll have 2 attacks per turn, and you’ll be an absolute badass.

Alternatively, you can do 2 levels of War Cleric and 10 Evocation/Abjuration Wizard for extra attacks at the cost of a bonus action, any spells you want, and high AC.

I like the idea of sword bard, i played Bard at one point and loved it, but never got to far. I will try that out!!

The special attacks you unlock with bardic inspiration can also proc smites, so if you hit two enemies at once, I believe you should be able to get 2 smites in 1 turn (if you roll a crit for both enemies)

Am I dumb? I don't understand how a Warlock isn't 'battle-mage' material.

It is and it's the most obvious most straightforward option too.

Sure, but you’re limited to 3 spell slots per short rest, with the highest being level 5.

9 lvl 5 spells per long rest (12 with a bard in a party) and the most powerful cantrip in the game seems pretty good to me.

I've been playing 6 Warrior (Eldritch Knight) 6 Wizard on honour mode. In the final parts of Act 3 atm. Been wielding a Sword in one hand and a staff in the other the entire time. It's been a fun run tbh.

If you want more spellcasting than frontline brawling you could go 2 Warrior, 10 Wizard instead.

If you're willing to try mods, there's a few options better than the eldritch knight, my personal favorite is the vanguard class. (Also some that upgrade the EK, too.)

If you really think about battlemage and do not mind using mods - better try Hexblade Warlock and Battlesinger Wizard subclasses.
Also Bard can fullfil your requirements 100%. Just go Swords or Valor Bard.
