The original Wyll had no immediate connection to Karlach that was mentioned in Early Access, and Mizora was already captured at the start of the game.
His goal was to reunite with her and ask that the pact be broken, and he was so driven by his desire to find her, that he was willing to do morally reprehensible acts. Such as torturing information out of the prisoner in the Goblin Camp, because the torture master promised to give him the information about Mizora's whereabouts.
I think he looks stupid, because those horns are shaped in such a way that it would make sleeping in any position (back, front, side) incredibly uncomfortable. He could always just cut them off, but that would make him even growing horns in the first place rather pointless.
If you obey your orders and kill Karlach, you get a cool robe which allows you to cast Flame Shield on yourself once per day, and later on in act 2, you can convince Mizora to give you a unique rapier.
He also knew the goblin who was tormenting the gnome on the windmill, and insisted that we kill the goblin after we finished interrogating him.
--------------
Remember that during Early Access, Larian stated that these were supposed to be the EVIL party members. They were reserving the good ones for full release, because they were afraid nobody would use the evil ones after the good guys became available.
Sadly, it seems Larian decided to rewrite the party at the last minute, changing everybody into either good guys, or making them morally gray at worst.
Even the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Drow can be convinced to open up and display a softer side to herself.
Wyll stays Human.
Yeah, that's why nobody ever plays base human. They all want Variant Human, but Variant Human isn't a playable option in BG3.
