away team tried that, it was ♥♥♥♥.
A Star Trek CRPG would be something interesting, that's for sure... and now I'd want one set in the Dominion War.
I wouldn't mind a Whale's Voyage* remake or alike too but that's never going to happen.

Or like the Traveller CRPG but...I've heard that wasn't great:

I think the key would be keeping it a bit unusual - party based squad ground combat should probably NOT be the core gameplay mechanic if it wants to feel at all Star Trekish
I know it's not as popular as Wars or Trek, but hey, I like what I like.
But I highly recommended colony ship, if it weren't for BG3 that would have been my goty, the depressing, oppressive and bleak atmosphere was a major part for me, it also gave me aniara vibes which is one of my favourite films.
The prospect of being born on the ship and dying on the ship never seeing either planet is cool setting.
Also don't know if it counts but underrail is also a joy.
Its not an RPG but stargate actually got a turn based isometric game a year or so ago if I remember right.
Sorry, but Fallout combat is not particularly great. Mostly you can get in range and attack. Maybe an aimed shot of questionable value to spice things up, and that's pretty much it.
Also of course for a lot of people the production value of BG 3 makes a difference.
Well, combat is better in BG3, but it's not something that we haven't seen. DoS 1/2 are probably on par in terms of combat and there are definite similarities in how environment and elements can be used to get advantage...
For me personally combat is not the most important thing in CRPG. Planescape Torment for me is still #1 altho combat there is very simplistic and definitely not the main focus of the game...
There aren't many RPGs of ANY genre quite as large in scope and scale as BG3, or with the level of reactivity and polish. Mind you, i'm not blind to BG3's flaws. But I'm not blind to it's strengths either.
Now if you just want Sci-Fi RPGs in general, there's already been some good ones offered. I'm going to assume you want to stick to CRPGs and Tactical RPGs, and don't want things like Fallout 3/NV/4 or MAss Effect.
So here's some of my suggestions.
Colony Ship
Encased: A Sci Fi Post Apocalyptic RPG(Yes that's all part of the title, lol)
Fallout 1 and 2. and Fallout Tactics.
Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3. I guess maybe Wasteland 1 if you're hardcore about it but that's an old game and it shows. It's not really necessary for the sequels anyway. The first game in the series was light on story and character. Everything you need to know is revealed over the course of the sequel. And fun fact, this is the series that was the spiritual predecessor for Fallout. So if you start thinking "Hey! They're copying Fallout!" then check yourself. Fallout was copying Wasteland.
There's others I could recommend but I don't think they could be considered CRPGs in the Way Baldurs Gate is. But in case you're interested, i'll throw out some lesser known games in the genre i've enjoyed...
Elex 1 and Elex 2. Sort of a Jankier lower budget take on Skyrim/Fallout-style gameplay, world exploring, and faction alignments. Straddles the genre line a bit between Sci Fi and Fantasy, but mostly Sci Fi i think.
Cyberknight Flashpoint - Sort of a XCOM-style game with MUCH heavier empasis on stealth mechanics. Also has some of the most engaged, friendly Devs i've ever seen. Still in Early Access but VERY frequently updated.
Robocop: Rogue City. "Dead or alive, you are coming with me." Nuff said.
Maybe not the most important thing. But in a game where a lot of the playing time is combat, I definitely prefer that the combat not be bad.
In lieu of that I would recommend the Mass Effect series, Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds, and Knight of the Old republic 1 & 2.
