Is there a consequence for Volo dying?
Act 3, lower city, died.

Will this make any difference in a quest? Will it change the epilogue?

A bit.
You have a quest "Gather Your Allies", ones the time comes (the final battle), these people will give you certain buffs or help in combat. Volo can give +2 bonus to Attack Rolls, Saving Throws and Ability Checks.
It's pretty good. Maybe not a "reload your save file, even if it's five hours of gameplay ago, and do everything in your power to save him" type of good, but still good.

Damn that´s a good buff... but I´m afraid it´s been a long time ago that I saved

Thanks for the info. I´m surprised he doesn´t change the epilogue, would be fun if he made a book about your adventure :steamsad:

Oh, I forgot about the epilogue.
Yes, he does have a cameo, where he talks about writing a book about you. He hasn't published it yet, though, and he doesn't give you a draft. He asks about its title.

In DnD canon, him dying is a VERY bad thing, honestly XD

Bad thing? Why? I already got pissed by the eye surgery and his interview at the grove lol... he isn´t exactly a reliable story teller

For future runs, you can create water or ice on him or just peel off 1 of your party and free him immediately before he goes boom.

The barrels he is sitting on come in handy in Avernus, so you don't want to waste those.

Following D & D FR canon, he probably isn't really dead, just mostly dead.
(sorry, had to use a Princess Bride joke there).

Because he can't die, or ...

Besides the endgame buff, he can give you Slayer Knowledge, which may help in your fight against Orin . And as before, can act as a trader in your camp, if you are too lazy to sell all your junk to somebody in the city.

In DnD canon (and something he absolutely never needs to know about), he's a Weave anchor. Basically if anything were to happen to Mystra and/or the Weave, he serves as the means to make it so it doesn't collapse. Dunno if that still holds true for BG, but seeing as it still follows proper DnD canon, it should still be the same.

That´s a bit over the top wow

He died in my last game, too. With a bang.

That being said, although he is providing nice buffs, you do not lose that much at the end.

In terms of BG3? No, it won't really impact anything.

In terms of table top, however?

Yes, Volo is one of Mystra's contingency lynch pins for keeping The Weave intact, should she ever be killed again.

Volo is not aware of his status, which Mystra believes to be a good thing, because of how stupid Volo is.

((I don't know if him being a lynch pin is how Volo is able to still be alive 100 years after the Bhaalspawn saga, despite appearing to be a Human?))

The eye surgery gives you a permanent See Invisibility buff on the patient. It's very useful, unlike the Hag's Eye which gives you a permanent disadvantage on Perception checks and attack rolls.

And yet do we still lose an eye, or...?
I ask this because losing an eye affects ones ability to evade critical hits, which is totes important, ya?

Woah woah, it's not permanent disadvantage on perception checks and attack rolls in general, only against hags, which Ethel is the only one of in the entire game. It also does buff your intimidation rolls. Still way worse than Volo's eye, but not nearly as crippling as you're implying.

Volo is both - a weave anchor and a chosen of Mystra, which are 2 different things.
As a weave anchor, should he die the weave itself will get unravelled to a degree, which will, as long as it's only volo dying and not some of the other weave anchors becoming loose as well, most likely result in heavy "weavestorms" probably wild magic surges all over the planes etc.
As a chosen of Mystra he additionally holds _some_ of Mystras power, in case she gets attacked again. It allows Mystra to regain her power through him and other chosen.
So in a sense he's a Mystraspawn, if you want to think about it that way.
Both of those are very good reasons, why Mystra herself keeps Volo so longlived.
His first notable book was released 1358 DR - 137 ingame years before the events of BG3. Assuming he was already at least in his early 30ies ther, he is at the very minimum 167 years old, though I'm not sure if his exact age is mentioned somewhere.
We however know, that Volo spent some time as a stone ornament and as a frog in Elminsters Pool, because he annoyed Elminster and others so much that it was either that or blasting it...so Elminster was the mature old mage he was and mde him spend "oh I don't know, 18 years, or 20 years or 50 years" as a frog...according to Ed Greenwood.

Great watch in regards to volo: Ed Greenwood himself talking about volo:

This is also the reason, why we can say confidently, that even if he appears to be dead ingame, in Lore he definitely is not...he's probably only spending another 50 or so years as a frog or something of that nature...^^
