It may have been a bug, but on my Dark Urge play through, the Bahlists that were suppose to be on my side fought against me and I had to kill them about half way up the tower.
Just did that in my durge/honor mode run last week. I also went back to the save afterwards and denied Bhaal, there's a new epilogue camp ending for that choice worth checking out.
If you want to lone wolf it, you can just not recruit any of them. You don't have to.
But you don't have to lone wolf without companions - Withers will happily sell you three hirelings. Just be warned, they don't talk much. Being kinda zombies and all. That might be what you want, of course.
I don't agree with your assessment of the companions, of course, but figured I'd answer your question, anyway.
If you don't like the Origin party, you can host a multiplayer game, wait for 3 other people to join, then once they're done making characters, you kick them out, switch to single player and rebuild them with the Mirror and Withers.
The only thing the mirror can't change, unfortunately, is their race.
There is nothing more holy, to a Bhaal cultist than getting murdered by the spawn of the god of murder that they worship.
By letting you kill them, they are showing their devotion.
Bhaal's own children tried to slaughter each other for the chance to inherit their father's throne. What makes you think his cultists would show you any more loyalty than your own siblings?
