Need help, mods broke my game
Im new to mods and i am addicted to this game, but the mods broke my game.

I downloaded and directly installed the "multiclass to 20" mod and then realized Having this mod prevented me from playing co-op. I tried removing the associated files but that broke my game by loading in the main menu with missing assets and frame rate errors and save files failed to load. so I undid the file removals. then decided to completely uninstall the game from steam and my computer, then reinstall it fresh from steam. now the main menu doesn't load at all and kicks me from the game launcher.

I sent larian a support request a week ago with no follow up. I've already accepted the idea of losing all of my save game data. I just really want to play again...

Divinity doesn't scratch the same itch.

1. If you're new to mods then you should be aware that "mod at your own risk" is a very well known saying for unofficial mods.

2. Larian didn't get back to you because it's not their problem.

3. Uninstalling doesn't fully remove mods. You'll need to look up how to completely wipe the mods from your system to fix whatever you broke.

4. Usually asking for help with mods is best done on whatever site you got your mods from. They have more experience fixing whatever you broke.

Using mods always carries the risk of completely borking a save file and resulting in a complete deletion of said save and reinstall of the game in some cases.

That said, IF the save file can be saved, then Angel's guide is your best bet.

Because of the way the Mods currently can work, just deleting them may not be enough. So...

1. From the AppData LarianStudios directory, copy out any Save files that have NOT had Mods when they were saved. Depending on the Mods, save files could be corrupted if they were saved when Mods were in use.

2. Uninstall BG3

3. Delete the BG3 in the Steam Common directory.

4. Delete the *ENTIRE* Larian Studios directory (assuming you don't have D:OS / D:OS2 installed) in the AppData location.

5. Re-install BG3

6. Copy your save files back into the AppData Larian save location. Remember, NO modded save files!

Good Luck :)

Deleting the files related to the mod is necessary.

Verify integrity of files with steam after if you don't have any back up, it should do the trick to recover the originals.

Edit : to be precise you need to manually delete in the folder if you want them to be permanently removed, uninstalling from steam doesn't remove everything.

Another modder fanboi singing the Modder Fanboi Blues.

Of course Larian won't help because mods are your problem, not theirs.

Just goes to show once again that when you install a mod, you give up your right to a working game.

Retrace your steps of what you installed. Thats all you CAN do. Larian won't help you, you broke it yourself by using mods. At this point using mods in a very active patch-phase of a release is pretty uh, not smart. TURN OFF automatic updates for the game and learn to manually update when your mods have been properly updated.

The risks of broken saves when removing mods because they weren't working in the newest patch was a guarantee death.. I'm just astonished that this isn't common sense already.. maybe my years of Skyrim modding just made me S.M.R.T.. You'll get their eventually, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at Larian about it and demanding help from this is kinda well.. lul.

Like watching a car crashing into a tree just for the driver to hit the reverse and crashing into another tree in their back... wowser...

What do you want now? Play the game vanilla or with mods as before? Or both?
Either way you need to make a proper cleanup first, otherwise you can redownload the game no matter how often you want, you will keep getting the same result.

Since you are the only person to provide any usable info, I wanted to follow up.
Unfortunately, this still did not fix my game. I didn't even try to rescue any of my save files.
I'm still getting an error before the main menu and getting kicked from the launcher.

I appreciate your help.

What happens if you go into the Steam Common directory for BG3 and start the BG3_DX11.exe directly? This bypasses steam and the launcher both and goes straight to the game itself.

And if there is an error, exactly what does it say, please?

See what I'm talking about. Mod's as mainstream are inherently bad for the gaming community. It was always meant to be niche.

I just tried manually deleting all files through the file explorer instead of letting steam delete the files so it's currently trying to reinstall again... (26hour install... I think i have an Ethernet cable problem that i need to wait for a replacement cable to fix...)

but the error is summarized into "the current game mod does not support the main menu. please fix the game mod or contact larian support,"

Sorry about the long install. :(

Did you follow the instructions I listed out previously? Especially about deleting the Larian folder in AppData? That is critical.
Ironwu Oct 3, 2023 @ 5:20pm
That error indicates that the Larian folder was NOT fully deleted and that there is a setting that is attempting to load a mod when you fire up the game.
guard65 Oct 3, 2023 @ 5:26pm
My guess is you used some mod installer.

That MOD is super simple and just uses basic override files. All you have to do is remove the folder called public under the BG3\data\
All it does is drop two files (XPData.txt) into that structure.

Delete the whole public folder and that mod is gone completely.

If it does not work then you have problems completely unrelated to that mod.
