What happens with no companions?
I didn't try it but the way it's structured - I'm pretty sure you can never get any of the companions:

-- Don't wake Shadowheart on the beach and walk away
-- Don't go to Astarion's place and don't talk to him
-- Don't pull Gale out of the rune, ignore it
-- Don't talk to Wyll in the Grove
-- Skip the location where Lae'zel is caged and don't go to the Mountain Pass
-- Skip Karlah's location and tollhouse entirely
-- Kill Minthara as usual
-- Skip Halsin's quest by just not talking to the sleeping soldier
-- Don't ask Jaheira to join

So - what happens then? Assuming you can get through all the fights, will the story break? What happens when you approach the goblin camp without finding Shadowheart for instance, the artifact is still with her, so you won't get its protection? Any other things to happen?

You can get dialogue that has you brag that you don't need no companions in specific situations.

None of the companions are needed for the main story, just their companion quests wont happen. as for the artifact, if you dont have shadowheart in your party there is small cutscene of it flying into your inventory (somewhere)

It's like the DM be like "I have this plot-critical item that is RIGHT there and you just kept skipping it, so fine. FINE. It just magically flies into your inventory, are you happy yet, mister lonely murderhobo?!" XD

Ha! And I thought (hoped?) the MC will become a mindless drone of the Absolute when he approaches the goblin camp without Shadowheart recruited. That would be at least "consistency", "proper narrative" and "consequence for your choices". Oh well.

Oh, there are consequences for it later in the game if you make some eceedingly bad decisions one after the other which ARE related to the artifact.

To not waste time on the experiment if it breaks somewhere mid-act 2 while I've already poured 30-40 hours on it?

Not entirely true, several of what I assume to be Gale's quest regarding the wizzard in the tower bleeds into your other quests lines even though he is stuck in the portal.
My character even once remarked 'this is the book gale wanted, we should show it to him'.

While it's highly confusing it doesn't break the game per say - well unless ofc that him 'missing' is the reason I can no longer progress the Voss quest line

Shadowheart is a stalker
You WILL have that box.
What makes the Goblin fortress so special, that going there specifically, require protection, isn't explained at all. I guess reasons.

It's not going ro break.
Shart, the vampire, the frog and Wyll are all dead on mine, the rest I just didn't pick up. Well, I picked up Gales hand.
We are in the city now and no problems.

Aside from the book in the tower. Which is that I just can't complete the side quest, 12 anyway so not a big deal. I think that bit of dialog to "let gale know" is a bug.

In the beginning of Act III, there's a cat you see on a rooftop that triggers the remark "That look's like Gale's cat"

We hated Gale on our run, so we didn't bother with him after we got Minthara.

This guy manages most battles just fine Solo.

Just had a hard time with The Harpies.

Same for willess whyll - I plan on assasinating him in the grove before recruiting Karlak this time round, hopefully it wont mess up the story too badly, but I just cannot stand that spinless whining YA edgelord :(

Right. I don't think the game is fully understanding that your PC doesn't know who Gale is or that he left.

It's happened when we have left him in the rock, when I've cut off his hand, and when I've run him out of the party. but aside from nonsensical out of place pc statements its not broken the game.

You can play this game with 4 custom Tavs in mutiplayer, which would leave no room for origin party members, and still compete the game.

Yes, some side quest will be closed off as they were origin based, the book, Sharts parents, ect. None of those quest have anything to do really with the rest of the game and don't have a huge impact on experience gain.

You can still save the Nightsong and still kill Cazador. The only difference is the lack of origin drama llamas and a few broken lines of dialog.
