Eldritch Knight is Unplayable
Without EKs core cantrips like Green-Flame Blade, Shadow Blade and Booming Blade, the entire subclass is entirely useless. Its like releasing Wizard and not having Magic Missile or druids without wild shapes.

And while I know mods can add in cantrips, they are all largely buggy and unreliable.

Surely it would not be insurmountable to fix an entire subclass by releasing a few cantrips which necessarily need to be in the game for it to work.

All of this, to say you don't really know DnD. If Eldritch Knight is so unplayable, then how come it was a sublcass that has been used since the player's handbook? Meanwhile the spells you list here only came into being with Tasha's Cauldron, which was released YEARS after the Players Handbook?

Would it be nice to have them? Yes. But are they VITAL to play the game? Hell no.

EK is weird to me too, by all accounts its just a weaker version of wizard/fighter multiclass.

The scion from pathfinder was AMAZING battlemage type, EK seems weak overall. Dunno how its lightsaber throw good, but otherwise its meh.

While EK gets war magic its kinda late in game, shoud be much earlier.

Wizard/fighter multiclass is just mostly wizard with abit of fighter to get that action surge.

Nah, you can go mostly fighter, all you need is level 2 wizard spells. Shield/blur/mirror image, thats good enough, and get some school spec. In the end you just get much more tankier fighter for not a big price.

Step 1. - Pick Githyanki
Step 2. - Paladin/Multi Class into EK
Step 3. - Go to Mountain Pass
Step 4. - Finish the game Solo on Tactician-Difficulty

Sounds like a gimped mage or a gimped fighter.

How is that gimped? You get level 2 spells earlier than EK, you get two subclasses, what exactly do you gimp? Any multiclass is gimped compared to full class, but you get things you otherwise wouldnt.

It's fine, you just have to multiclass to get more spellslots and higher level spells.

7 fighter and 5 wiz works just fine, even in endgame. You're not going to be as strong as a smite machine, but it is still capable of trucking through tactician with ease.

Basically you're either a fighter with mediocre spell damage or a mage with mediocre melee.

I already said you dont multiclass wizard for damage, at least shouldnt in most cases. You do it to get shield/blur/mirror image that provide you insane AC. You also get some other utiliy like longstrider, feather fall etc which is pretty good.

i dont think ANY multiclass with wizard will be close to damage potential of pure wizard, correct me if im wrong, usually you pick wizard for utility.

Level 3 spells are very useful though, mainly for Haste.

The EK class in BG3 is ok, but not one of the better classes. Still decent enough and definitely not "unplayable"

Eldritch Knight 11 Wizard 1 gets access to level 3 spells, two extra attacks and 3 feats.

That's not too shabby especially if you're going to use weapon bond to throw a spear while wielding a shield for extra defense.

Those cantrips actually made their first appearance in SCAG, only a year later, and they were considered important enough to reprint.
