Would it be nice to have them? Yes. But are they VITAL to play the game? Hell no.
The scion from pathfinder was AMAZING battlemage type, EK seems weak overall. Dunno how its lightsaber throw good, but otherwise its meh.
While EK gets war magic its kinda late in game, shoud be much earlier.
Nah, you can go mostly fighter, all you need is level 2 wizard spells. Shield/blur/mirror image, thats good enough, and get some school spec. In the end you just get much more tankier fighter for not a big price.
Step 2. - Paladin/Multi Class into EK
Step 3. - Go to Mountain Pass
Step 4. - Finish the game Solo on Tactician-Difficulty
How is that gimped? You get level 2 spells earlier than EK, you get two subclasses, what exactly do you gimp? Any multiclass is gimped compared to full class, but you get things you otherwise wouldnt.
7 fighter and 5 wiz works just fine, even in endgame. You're not going to be as strong as a smite machine, but it is still capable of trucking through tactician with ease.
I already said you dont multiclass wizard for damage, at least shouldnt in most cases. You do it to get shield/blur/mirror image that provide you insane AC. You also get some other utiliy like longstrider, feather fall etc which is pretty good.
Level 3 spells are very useful though, mainly for Haste.
The EK class in BG3 is ok, but not one of the better classes. Still decent enough and definitely not "unplayable"
That's not too shabby especially if you're going to use weapon bond to throw a spear while wielding a shield for extra defense.
Those cantrips actually made their first appearance in SCAG, only a year later, and they were considered important enough to reprint.
