This game punishes exploration
I always love to explore the map and try to get all quests before deciding which one to do, now as a first time player, I was exploring the area around the druid grove in Act I, and there are a ton of places to see, I just walked a bit towards the east and got automatically given this "explore the singing" quest, the text didn't give me any sort of urgency, I just walked a bit into the area to be given this quest, now after a long rest, I learn tiefling kid dies if you are given the quest and do a long rest , what the actual f*ck? How can a player guess this, I just heard the song, and I actually thought that tiefling singing nearby was the one. Didn't know the quest was related to that new area, just plain random punishment for going out to a new area and not immediately finishing it.

This isn't "consequence", it's just bs. I was just trying to save all tieflings without cheating or looking ahead into the story.

I wasn't aware I needed to, if there was a kid yelling for help then yeah, I should've been punished, but I was already weak at the time and was looking for easy pickings, just giving out quests like that then punishing people is just weird.

Harpies gotto eat, they'll eat you too, if you're not careful 😉

There are times, just like in life, that things happen that you are not aware of...
that said, the quest pops up. It has details if you read it... and is shown both on the main map and the minimap. You had to get pretty close to the kid to trigger the quest... and then you went to camp, had dinner, and went to bed.
No need to look ahead in the story to see the consequences... you foresaw a fight, had a nap to reload spells, and it backfired.

The real question is how long ago since you saved? because even the autosave wouldn't be that far back.

For the record, just like in the tabletop version of a d&d game, taking a long rest can be problematic. Time passes, and the world moves on... without you.

If that is a problem, there are even places where you CANNOT rest... so it gets dangerous.

Nah quest triggers much earlier, had only walked a bit towards the area, and I didn't know it was related to any kid or fight, I walked back to the druid camp, and talked with the lady trying to sing nearby, so I assumed that was the singing I heard, really bs punishment

The world exists without your actions. That's DnD for you. If you don't like it, this kind of game isn't for you. Move on.

This isn't punishment its dynamic story development. Roll with it, your character upon learning what happened to that kid can feel bad about not investigating when they first noticed it. This can inform their actions in the future adding motivation and character development to your playthrough. This stuff is BG3 at its finest!

So you didn't check what that kid was doing down there and what was that song about and went to have a good night a sleep instead of investigating then you come here to cry about that kid getting eaten by harpies ?

I'm not sure if you're missing the actual point of "exploration" or just stupid.

not really, it doesn't add anything within the game, just in your mind maybe, exaggerating a game

I agree on one account:
In the dungeon at the end of Act 2, there's an optional area that you need to break through a death shepherd and his undead army to get to.

Your only reward for it is some extra exposition and some mediocre gear, for a fight that's probably gonna cost you a short rest, spell slots, and some potions, in an area where you can't long rest.

Eventually at the end boss of the act, I just decided the best course of action was to load back to before I took that detour so I can conserve my resources for the boss.
Really I think you're punished for going back there because there's nothing worthwhile to gain by doing so.

So somehting bad happened in your playthrough. Neat. Now you can prevent it on your next one.

There wasn't any hint of a kid being in trouble or any fight don't u understand, wth? I thought the tiefling bard nearby was the source of the singing, really bs to put that npc there

That is not a good game, if you know what to do beforehand, just read a walkthrough in your first game.

I didn't even find that quest at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's by design.
Best advice for BG3: live with your choices. Whatever happens, do not reload (unless your party is wiped out, that is). There's enough content, loot and exp to carry on.

1st time I went to act2 I ended up freeing nightsong before I even seen the inn or the tower.
Ohh, that is so different from my experience :) I couldn't do this, as first i had to get the lantern.
