Healing is ineffective in combat.
In tabletop 5e everyone just uses healing word to pop-up downed allies, because healing doesn't scale well at all in 5e. Please make healing word and cure wounds scale better since we lose our actions after being healed back up now. They should add two dice per higher spell slot instead of one, at least.

Nah you just need to fix your skill issue. :3

When it comes to healing they mostly just need to nerf how abundant healing pots are. Throwing them is also pretty broken especially if your throwing a what is supposed to be a 5-10k gp supreme and hitting multiple ppl.

Yes throwing a healing potion makes it broken. Thats the entire point of hrowing it. :3

theres a hat that heals you when you heal someone else

If you think the existence of trenches is a counter argument to the established and extensive value of high ground in warfare , then you wildly misunderstand the usage of trenches, and should probably cease speaking when it comes to the subject of warfare.

As other said - there are particular builds (including special equipment) who will result in "proper healers". I tend to tweak Shadowheart towards that - and I like to have an Oath of the Ancient (OotA) paladin with me as an off-healer. (most of the time it's my main)

A properly build & outfitted Shadowheart will bring a nearly downed party back to full health including additional buffs (temp hitpoints, protection, bless) in one round. The OotA paladin can bring a single party member back to the fight pretty fast as well - and having a strong aoe heal divided into two turns as well.

Equipment you never should sell / always give your healer (life domain cleric, obviously):
  • The whispering promise (ring act1, bless on heal)
  • Ring of salving (ring act1, additional heal)
  • The reviving hands (gauntlets act3, blade ward)
  • Wapira's crown (helmet act1, heal self on heal others)
I think a lot of folks are misinterpreting my original post. Healing is fine the first couple levels, the problem is it doesn't scale into mid or high levels. It loses effectiveness every level you get since it doesn't keep up proportionally with your max hp, not even close. I don't think we need dedicated heal-bots, but as of now healing is so ineffective IN COMBAT AFTER LEVEL 2 that there is no point to use it outside healing word on a downed ally. Which, again, Larian nerfed from base 5e (not a bad thing imo), so because healing received a nerf I think a commensurate buff in its overall effectiveness is needed. Higher level healing spells aren't even very effective for non-life clerics.

tl;dr the healing issue is one of proportion, not totality.

Technically, healing is buffed in the form of items that apply additional effects when you heal targets. One of the best items in the game for this are gauntlets that give Blade Ward to any targets affected by your heals, which is pretty huge, and you can get them very early on.

And I'm totally okay with them nerfing yo-yo healing in favor of this approach.

That's not my experience. I respec'd Shadowheart to Life Cleric and pretty much every round I use a bonus action to heal the whole group, keeping them topped off.

You have clearly never used a life cleric with the items that give bonus' when you heal like blade ward etc. Life cleric can do the job no problems.
Use beacon of hope when you think its going to get tough and all your heals will be maxed out and then some from all the other bonus' like extra hps when you heal, blade ward, heal yourself for extra when you heal others and even more items. Beacon of hope also gives team bonus on wis saving throws i think.

my guess is you specced your cleric for damage spells, which is fine if you are better with your tactics etc

That's because 5thE D&D de-emphasized healing as a role.

With BG3's itemization, and as an Oath of the Ancients Paladin/Life Cleric multiclass, you can get close to old school "healer".

Most people, however, find it easier to skip healing and just kill faster. Killing your opponent before they damage you in the first place is more effective than healing because you need to kill them anyway. If you are trading dpr/alpha for healing, you're just prolonging the fight, and it's often a losing proposition since the math is against you.

Damage mitigation (high AC, damage resistance, temp hp/shields) > healing.

i only ever use the healing spells in combat if the cleric has items that grant other buffs on heal, outside of that it seems pretty worthless to me.
for healing potion>all (the high level heal that heals for like 70 is somewhat useful)

in general damage = king. kill fast you wont need heals :)

Oh boy, I sure do love blowing a 4th level spell slot on Healing Word to recover a measly 12 HP on a downed character, who will go down again as soon as they take a single hit from any of the random mobs we're fighting! ~sarcasm

Well, just use a first level spell. And it's sure better than the help action!
This just isn't an RPG system that has a dedicated healer role that needs to cast heals on most of their turns - to me that's not a bad thing.
Do people even read? NON-LIFE CLERICS. NOT LOOKING FOR A DEDICATED HEALER ROLL, JUST EFFECTIVE SPELL SLOT USE.
