I'm gonna be as contrarian as possible and vote for Empire of the Petal Throne rather than contribute to the discussion

Why do people prefer 2e? Genuine question.
A lot of people grew up on it, and it was a vast improvement on 1e. The fact that I could perform the calculations in my head on the fly is part of the reason I am as strong in math as I am now. But at its core, the rules don't matter as much. We homebrewed tons if stuff and cooked up rules on the fly, many of which became official in 3.5e. It was always about sitting around a table with friends and making memories in our fantasy worlds. 2nd Ed was every bit as good for that as 3.5e or 5e.

Yep. I mainly knew all of these systems through crpgs rather than pnp (always played 5e or Cyberpunk Red or more simplified systems).
2e was really hard when I first try. It was only after neverwinter nights that I started to get how to play it. And several searches on the internet.

2nd edition if given the full range of choices. 3.5 if limited by the OP. I own everything from the original paperback first edition from the 70s-3.5. I played 5th edition for a year with friends and it was just too over the top. 3.5 isn't terrible but in truth 2nd edition is where its at.
My friends and I agree that Edition 2 was the best. We had later versions of Edition 3 stuff but we just thought it inferior.
