Any input from anyone who has finished the game with half-illithid and was playing a good character?
I've already done my first run as a redemption arc dark urge who went full illithid in order to destroy the brain rather than trust the emperor to do it or turning karlach into an illithid and to keep the githyanki prince from being freed in case freeing him is worse than letting the brain loose (considering he's a psionic powerful enough to stop an elder brain and the githyanki being a race of powerful fighters with zero regard for the other races or innocent people, just seems like a bad idea since they are so violent, don't want to give them a leader that powerful so they can do whatever they want).

Anyway, point being I wanted to know if anyone had done a playthrough where they didn't go full illithid, only half, and either let the emperor take on the brain or freed the prince and let him do it, and if going half illithid has any consequences for your character once the brain is dead.

Technically at that point your character should still have full control of themselves and the tadpole should die and you shouldn't finish your transformation.

It does affect your appearance, but are there really no downsides to it other than that?

I was still able to do all the things with companions with no issues even after becoming partial illithid and the powers it gives are pretty awesome, especially the most powerful one being the ability to instantly kill anything that gets below a certain hp threshold based on your number of unlocked powers.

So I would really like to go only half and then finish the game without getting turned into a full mind flayer once the brain is dead if that's possible.

If not, then oh well, will just unlock as many as I can without evolving.

Spoilers below obviously, read at your own discretion.

The tldr if you haven't already figured it out is that it doesn't matter who you choose. Ending is completely based on your dialogue choices. Although you are seen differently if you are half/full ilithid.

I think the best ending is freeing Orpheus (probs the most reasonable Gith ever, especially cosaidering what he's been through) by stealing the hammer/killing Raphael (devil), and making Gale a full Ilithid. Mystra will ascend Gale as she doesn't want him to have the cruel fate of being an ilithid.

If you aren't dating Karlach, as long as you finish Wyll's quest line, he will go to Avernus with her. If you are dating her, just make sure you end his contract and still save his father (this is the way that I've tested where I know you can choose to go with Karlach instead, or with Wyll and Karlach).

I went half ilithid, declined Raphael, and trusted the Emperor. I had the emperor kill Orpheus and had to persuade Lae-zel to reason. Spoiler ahead:

The emperor becomes a fifth playable companion in the last battle against the ilithid and the netherbrain and youre 100% cured from the tadpole after the brain is defeated. By the time the ending is rolling you don’t have the visible effects anymore.

None. When the brain dies so do the tadpoles if you do the good ending. So you are free. Although only your party that fought the brain revert from half, the rest in the cut scene are still half but I think that is a glitch

Ah, ok. So according to the game if you go half illithid and kill the brain you are "cured" and go back to being normal and probably lose the powers.

Got it, thanks for the answer :)
