Why do MEN create FEMALE CHARACTERS?
Okay, I swear to god this is an honest and curious question.
this is something I've always been wondering, but never asked much, and thought I might get some interesting answers here

Why do men like to play with female characters in games that you can choose your gender?

(For disclaimer I'm talking only about games where you can choose your gender, I don't feel nothing by playing 2B or Geralt of rivia for instance)

I'm a girl, and I really like playing female characters, I don't see any appeal in playing men, I can't exactly explain why, but as dumb as it sounds, I like to create and play a pretty female character and I probably feel that way bc there's more connection with my character representing my own gender I guess?

I've been playing online for as long as I can remember, and in all those years, I've ONLY MET ONE girl who played a male character, and she told me she did it so she wouldn't be bothered.
As for men, almost every female character I could find was being played by a guy. I thought for a long time that it was because of the sexy appeal of the female characters, or maybe bc some people could get free items as female?

Anyway, this happens in singleplayer games as well, and is happening in Baldur's Gate too, naturally, but there's little sex appeal here and nothing to gain, so what makes you choose a different gender for your character in this game and possible others? Is it about the roleplay? Is it about appearance?

Just to be sure, there is NOTHING wrong with that, and I know for a fact that there are girls who play male characters, as well as MANY men who play male characters. All I'm saying is based on my experience where the amount of men who chose this is much higher than the women.
And obviously I'm referring to man as people who identify as male as a gender

EDIT: Something I want to point out, I'm not necessarily saying about creating yourself, only your gender.
As much I love creating a female character, I don't ever create myself, I create a CHARACTER that I find suitable.... aaaand after reading some answers, I guess I don't find that nice BECAUSE I'm also a girl, but because they're pretty to look/nice to create?
Someone said that you either wanna ♥♥♥♥ or BE the character, I guess that's right lmao
for a lot of cases anyway

This. Because players are by far men. Men are by far straight, and we love you so much that we want to look at you 24/7. When a man plays a female character, he doesn't think in terms of "I will embody a woman", he thinks "I'm gonna play with my girl". It's not that we want to experience the world as the opposite sex, we think in terms of a relationship with our character "me and her".
That's....weird. I would guess its more about control than appearance, because you really don't "stare" at the player nor do you work on a mutually respectful relationship. Instead it's more of a god/slave type relationship. If that's what you are looking for in a relationship with a woman then it explains so much about this forum and the incel community

As far as the RPG genre is concerned I have played a wide array of characters, old or young, stupid or intelligent, male or female. It's all part of the imaginative escape, thinking about how my character would conduct themselves with x conditions in y circumstances.

Perhaps there is a stigma tethered to it for some but I think the idea of playing as the opposite sex has a sort of intrinsic appeal for most simply because in this way people can try to give a shape and identity to an ideal they are attracted to.

This. I played City of Heroes for years, mostly with females even though I'm a guy. My wife asked me why most of my characters were women and I said 'If I'm going to stare at butts all day, they might as well be nice ones.'

TBH, they also had better costume options for women than men for some reason so there's that.

It's weird you stare at the character's ass instead of playing the game, there's much cheaper and better porn.

I don't make myself in games. I make a character. I also enjoy attempting to get into the head space of my character in games.

You obviously don't get the appeal. It's the icing on the cake.

Because video games can offer you the choice to be who you want to be.

I find the Male and female appearance to be aesthetically pleasing to create. I like creating character backstories for both genders. I don't see how that is a problem for a guy to do. Everyone has fantasies about what they would do as themselves in these simulated situations. People also fantasize about the person they would consider or want to consider as their partner in these simulated fantasies as well.

If you think it is about sexual orientation or gender identity that is not always the case seeing as I am a straight male.

What is your objection to guys liking to play female characters? just curious.

typical coping take
LOL, that's not coping. The responder was just being honest, he likes looking at a woman's figure more than he cares about a 'deep connection' with his character or whatever else might motivate him to play a male character. Get over yourself and off that wanna-be moral high horse, it's pathetic and classless.

The "if I have to stare at an ass for 500 hours-" reasoning has always struck me as weird af because you have this whole world to be looking at and you choose to apparently CONSTANTLY make direct eye contact with your character's chocolate starfish. Sounds like a you thing tbh lmfao the game certainly didn't make you

"It's crazy that this game is forcing me to stare at this shapely man cake. I just can't stop looking - not that I CHOSE to stare at it for the majority of my playthrough, of course, the game forced me at all times, but it's wild how I just couldn't tear my eyes away from those juicy glutes for even a moment while playing. I really wish it was a woman instead, because I'm so straight. MAN those cheeks, though, so distracting!"
GWAHAHAHHAJUAIUDHIDSFS
I can't deny I looked sometimes to Geralt's in the witcher, but dude I almost don't look at the characters outside os the dialogs

Wrong, it's actually the opposite. Most of men that spend a lot of their free time gaming are on an age that women won't pay attention to them. Lack of money, lack of looks, not mature enough, shy, etc. It's nothing close to god/slave, is more like a way to "cover" a need to connect.

I play both male and female characters.
I personally don't really identify with my characters, i merely have ideas for interesting characters (looks, background, personality) and create them ingame, like someone would write a character for a book or a movie.
In regards to my characters i see myself more like a creator and observer at the same time, but i never really insert myself into them.
