Yeah, I want to know what's up with this as well. Unless I am misinterpreting the meaning of the word 'succeed,' I must be missing something. All I know is that I see:

"Astarion succeeded a hiding check against (enemy)."
"Astarion lost condition: Hiding."

How else am I supposed to stay hidden other than succeeding at the saving rolls?

If anyone has any ideas I'd be most appreciative.

Are you standing in their Line of Sight and in bright light? Because as far as I was aware, you make the check no matter what, but you can only be hidden in dim or dark light. If your in bright light then they just automatically see you.
I have this too, if i'm automatically going to fail a hide check then it should at least tell me.

Instead I have to sort of guess if I'm in the right spot and then click hide and hope the second check works. It's not at all fun when trying to set up sneak attacks, especially as I lose hide when I hit someone ranged automatically and so need to repeat the process again next turn.

It feels very poorly implemented.

I had the game glitch once where Astarian couldn't hide at all in battle. He was in dim light and I would select hide and he would immediately stand up, no check our anything. An enemy was looking right at him but he was in dim light.

It happens if you enter overlapping LoS and failed another hiding check for each enemy able to see that particular spot.

Did you make sure the enemy didn't have Darkvision, Blindsight, etc?

I don`t know how many checks they run. If I`m gonna toggle stealth I always avoid the sight unless I simply cant.
In case someone might not know, holding shift allows you to see the vision cones and the exposure outside of stealth, just like when its enabled when already on stealth.

This isnt Skyrim if your just crouching to stay hidden anyone can detect you, you go through a detect check for everytime someone looks at you, and odds are strongly against you even at high levels, if they look away then turn around and your in their sight again they detect you again.

If your trying to stay hidden in a crowded area, potion of invisibility or someone casting invisibility is the way to go.

I've had this a couple hundred times also - at least partially obstructed, 10+ meters away, hiding, check success, even in turn-based mode. I've even carefully navigated to a spot outside everyone's awareness cones in turn-based, triple checked it was at least somewhat obstructed and outside the cones, hit hide, and lost it instantly. You may say "well it's supposed to work that way, their eyes are following you." But that's not how it's reported, and that's not how 5e rules work either.

Does darkvision invalidate hiding?

Extinguish candles in any areas you intend to hide. When crouched you can see their vision range. Launch your assault while hidden for the surprise advantage. Darkvision does not illuminate, it allows you to see through their eyes.

Hold down left shift to see sight cones and then notice your cursor gives an indication of light level where it's pointed at. Hide in places with either half-full or totally empty pips that is outside of a sight cone for best results. Hiding in a sight cone is possible, but not ideal.

If you hide in an area with a full pip of light, you will fail your check.

And yes, multiple overlapping sight cones will cause multiple checks and you are very likely to fail at least one of those and that's really all it takes.

With a +10 to +20 in stealth you'll do ok but it's always a gamble if you are spotted.

Also, if you're serious about stealth choose a race that gets advantage to stealth. It's huge.

The main issue here is that the log reports that the character succeeds the hiding check, meaning A) They're not in bright light and B) the check was successful. So I don't know why they lose their hiding condition anyway.

There's two rules that make stealthing in DnD very difficult:

Rule 1
- If you stand in front of someone, in Bright Light, you will be seen no matter how high your Stealth is

Rule 2
- If an enemy has Darkvision, they treat Dim Light as if it were Bright Light.

80% of the enemies in BG3 have Darkvision. If you try to hide in Bright Light or Dim Light you will be seen. Your only hope is in complete Darkness but even then Darkvision treats this as Dim Light and you'll need to pass a Stealth Check to stay hidden from them.

No. But it makes dim light bright light for them, so if dim light is the only thing concealing you from them, you are effectively in bright light and can't stealth from them. You would need total darkness or other forms of concealment against darkvision.
