Does finding the Nightsong trigger act 2?
I remember people reading that they went after the Nightsong only to find they actually ventured into act 2 and ruined stuff. Did I read correctly/ I don't want to go into act 2 yet, but I'm here in the defiled temple and just passed the moon puzzle. How much further can I go before I trigger act 2?

You got quite a bit before that point still. From the Underdark route you'll eventually reach an elevator that when you try to use will have a message pop up saying you're about to venture forth and that you should clean up loose ends. That elevator takes you to Act 2. If you decide to backtrack and do Mountain Pass as well then you'll get the same message when you try to change maps after a bridge. There is also a message that pops up when you try to go from the first map to the Mountain Pass map that informs you that it's a difficult area, you can ignore that one, Mountain Pass is still Act 1 so you can enter it without fear of locking yourself out of quests/events

Nightsong can ONLY be found in Act 2, so I'd say yeah...

So which is it? I'm looking at the quest markers telling me to go through the passage to find the nightsong. Can I safely go through those passages or are they actually a way to act 2? If they take me to act 2 I'll turn around.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

While I can't confirm the underdark, you can go backwards to the mountain pass if you get into the main act 2 area, so it's not that big of an issue for that one at least.

I told you, Nightsong is ACT 2 ONLY. If you aren't in act 2, you aren't getting to it.

This is what I needed to know. So I can explore until a message pops up telling me to clear up loose ends.

Act 2 is the shadow lands, theres an entrance to in both the underdark (grymforge) and one in the mountain pass. If your at the temple you can do all of the content on that map and all the content in the underdark/grymforge and none of it is act 2.

Easy answer, Act 2 starts when you enter the Shadowlands - no turning back after that. Same with Leaving the shadowlands, that's Act 3.

You get a warning that basically say "This is the point of no return", so I wouldn't fret.

this isn't 100% correct.. you can get to the "Mountain Pass" area FROM the shadowlands - up to a point. I believe the Point of No Return is actually entering the Shadowfell from the Sharran temple. It does pop up a warning telling you as much. alot of people think you have to choose: Underdark OR Mountain Pass, and you don't. You can do both.
