Is this game fun to play solo?
I don't have many people to play with

the benefit of solo is you get to play at your own pace and playstyle (no scheduling conflicts, no discussions about minmax vs rp, etc) and experience the full extent of the companion npcs, in multiplayer the "avatar" player characters can't interact with each other through dialogue and your npcs are "assigned" under the control of a player (assuming it's 2 or 3 player)

with 4 player there's basically 0 companion interaction and you can never take them out from camp because the limit is 4 party members, and you can't change avatar characters without starting over.

imo the best ways to play is solo or 2 player because then you both can choose 1 npc each + 1 npc to swap out at camp when you feel like it, and you get to listen in on the other half of dialogues so very little content is missed.

It's a 100+ hours cRPG - I'd say it is meant to be played solo. Sure, you can use co-op to play it with others - but I'd say only very few groups will see it completely through.
It is to me. While I have a friend I play co-op with (which is also a lot of fun,) it's really primarily a single player game imo. Co-op works and is very welcome, but can be a tad clunky at times. On the other hand, there's a lot of freedom in it. You can completely go off in the world and do your own thing while other party members do other stuff. Which is pretty cool. You can also do things like pickpocket your co-op partners.

It is a singleplay game with multiplayer option. Not the other way around.

It depends on you and what you like. I would say that most persons would enjoy the game more solo, but some would prefer multiplayer. It's quite a bit different. Solo you control everything (that isn't controlled by the dice, which is a lot of things still granted), in multiplayer there is a LOT that can go on without you even being aware of it.

Personally, I found that I enjoyed more playing first solo and then re-doing the content in multiplayer I felt less frustrated on "missing" things because I mostly knew what they were. But it's really up to personal preferences.

All in all, the game is made a single player game "first" in my opinion and works amazingly as a single player game. It's still really good in multiplayer but it's not mandatory at all to enjoy the game.

This game was made to be single player first and foremost so no issus there, but whether it will be fun for you or not depend on your preference on game genre.

I think it's even better solo.

Hard to tell. If the related bugs are ironed out, I would not say that.

Alternatively, use mods and have the companions move as their own separate group. All the story fun and maintaining the difficulty. Who needs achievements anyway.

I think for a game like this co-op is only something you can do after you already finished the game once.

The first time you'll probably be too busy paying attention to the writing and exploring everything and having another person around who is likely doing the same and you cannot easily synchronize with each other since everybody likes to do things at their pace is likely not gonna work that well.

It's hard to say because we don't know you. For me, this game is at it's best when played solo and yes, loads of fun. A second coop playthrough is another matter entirely.

I have found multiplayer to be quite clunky, plus solo allows more time to explore and try different things. So I feel this is in fact a solo game, with a bit of multiplayer tacked on.

It is actually a solo game that can be played with others
