How necessary is it to have a thief in your party?
In BG 1 and 2 (and tbh in almost every crpg) it's kinda mandatory to have one, to open chests and detect traps.
I wanted to make my character a sorcerer but I dont wanna have Astarion in my party so if a thief is mandatory in this game as well I might have to create a thief myself after all...

Bonus on lockpick and disarm traps, but not essential. You'll just burn through inspiration and/or lockpicks/disarm items

Less than in BG1-2. You want people who are capable of opening locks and spotting traps, sure, but that doesn't necessarily need to be a Rogue/Thief in 5e, they just happen to excel at it. Your party Cleric should have a great perception score, and a ranger, bard, or similar can easily handle locks.

Which honestly I find very annoying considering I usually want to play a rogue. I feel redundant in my own party if I bring rogue companions along (I usually do because evil/neutral party).

No, you just need someone with good DEX (ranger, monk etc) and/or Sleight of hand proficiency that you can get with certain Backgrounds for yourself. Shadowheart has thieves prof as well.

"Why does everyone forget that Knock exists? It's USEFUL I PROMISE!"
- Every Wizard I've ever made.

I do hope it's implemented in the game. :/

Edit: yes, I know Knock makes a lot of noise. I dare anyone to stop me from getting the treasures I want.

Knock is useful as long as you have spells left. In the middle of a dungeon surrounded by enemies have fun trekking back to camp to rest up and gain your knock spells back.

That's great to hear it's not mandatory to have a pure thief, Minsc and Shadowheart are definitely candidates for my permanent party members.
And yeah, I forgot about the knock spell although it still was kinda annoying to have to change spell slots and then rest to open chests in BG 1 and 2.

That's why I always have a fireball.
So I can just end myself when I run out of Knocks.

Completely unnecessary if you have a Lore Bard who takes expertise in Sleight of Hand and Stealth. The only thing you miss out on is the Sneak Attack skill. With Expertise, the Lore Bard can be just as effective as any rogue in those skills, but can also serve as a better spell caster than Arcane Trickster.

Shadowheart also has some proficiency in Sleight of Hand, with the ability to cast Guidance on herself.

You can also just pick up the entire chest and put it in your bag to figure out later, if you've got the space and capacity for it.

I mean at that point might aswell announce yourself breaking in somewhere and then kick the door in...just about as subtle as knock...but let me guess you ignore verbal components? ;P

Heck no. Do you think I play a Wizard to be subtle? <_<

Knock is a lot more awkward in 5e due to the thunderous sound accompanying it. I didn't check to see if that's a thing in BG3, though.

i could be super wrong but i think shadow heart is pretty good at picking locks
