Do Non Lethal Attacks Work? What Am I Supposed To Do?
Hey everyone,

I have had two encounters now where the people mistook me as evil and I tried to knock them out and both encounters they all just ended up dead. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Do I need to use certain weapons or spells, or is this just bugged?

Thanks for your time

Only melee weapons work for non lethal damage, ranged weapons and spells are always lethal, and sometimes you'll run in to a bug where knocked out people get counted as dead

You cannot use spells or ranged weapons for the final blow if you have toggled on knock-out.

Not sure if this still happens but, in the past using non lethal with characters wielding enchanted weapons like the fire greatsword or a poisoned weapon would kill.

This is largely irrelevant anyway since I have never once located a time that the writers anticipated that anyone would actually use non-lethal attacks; instead they continue on acting like you went on a murder spree even when the NPCs are sitting there at full health and you can't use speak with the dead on them

Good to know, thanks for the explanation, I appreciate it

This, it only works on melee weapons, it doesn't have any interaction...at all.

Um there are plenty of characters that specifically have the trait that they won't be hostile if you knock them out and return later.

Not only that, Oaths exist and in many cases you get into fights by accident.

So you avoid your oath getting broken by knocking those people out.

Oath of vengance has no interaction with this, Oath of the ancients is broken the moment you START combat.

Knocking out is really only useful to avoid the "Law" debuff.
Quest targets only.
You can use it to save minsc or isobel from death.
Tho in the later case death would have been a mercy.
Handing her over was the dumbest thing i did in game.

Several quest targets don't even need it, they will yield before you can kill them. And knocking out some people will have them be treated as dead, like the brothers in the swamp.

Some attacks or spells have intrinsic lethality or non-lethality:

- Elemental spells in general are lethal.
- Abilities that apply off-balance are non-lethal.

Those will disregard your toggle.
