In BG2 my tanking was made by my fighter with shield, and jaheiras off tanking animals O_o I didnt need to rely on just me, same with dps, edwin and minsc. but even more than so, it was the party banter with 6 that made it wacky.
as for the topic at hand, I find 4 already quite a crowd to learn
on taktikan and 4 party members its easy to play
I only played BG1&2 as a kid, my pc has acted weird (... gonna get a new one when the next big pc game I want is coming out) so gonna play it - bg3- on my ps5 next month, so havnt "tested it" but I feel- in most fantasy games, I want to cover my wizrad for dps, cleric for healing, and fighter/paladin for tanking, which means I only have 1 slot left and I wish I had 2 frankly. because im gonna have to limit myself to a druid or rogue most likely.
and outside of fights you can just rest.
All companions at once? That would be a party of up to 11 people, lol.
For some reason my cleric hasn't even received an extra action.
Her heals are weak. Her utility is limited to spell slots. Her damage is even weaker and can only attack once.
I'm keeping her because I still expect some "oh ♥♥♥♥" moments, but man, never had a more useless character in a party.
