Why can't I romance my guardian? *spoilers*

Ever since getting acquainted with Japanese art I find tentacles very sexy. I tried to grab my guardians claw and he shied away. What is this discrimination? I also wanted to romance the little gnome guy strapped to the windmill, and he said something like "I'd kiss you but none of us would like that". Was it because I was male or because I was a different race? I thought this game was inclusive and yet, some inter species romance is not an option?
