Baldurs Reload 3
Start a fight you didn't expect. Enemy gets first turn. Enemy rushes towards your chracaters and pushes them easily to the abyss. Bye character. RELOAD

Find a mimic. Get lucky and notice it. Prepare for it. Mimic then proceeds to do a back pull, pulling one of your characters like 50 meters....into the abyss. RELOAD.

Explore a cave. Get ambushed. Companion gets pushed 3 consecutive times untill they fade into the abyss with no chance of doing anything, as it's not it's turn. RELOAD.

Really, the rest of the game is awesome, but fights...fights in DOS 2 were a blast. Why are they so damn bad in this game, Larian? Also, your karma dice don't work. As here we don't have a damn dungeon master to make constant bad RNG interesting (or diminish it), why make battles so INSANELY RNG DEPENDANT? Characters have so few actions per turn and we fight so many enemies at once that bad RNG becomes just another RELOAD. In DOS 2 you had more to do in battle, which ment that if you weren't lucky you could use your brain to change the odds. Here...not so much.

10/10 the rest.
4/10 combat.
1/10 RELOAD

I may turn the difficulty down to explorer. You might want to consider that.

I have to agree that in this day and age relying on d20 rolls is utterly stupid. It's kinda funny they called hard mode "tactician" as this RNG fiesta rarely has anything to do with your actual strategy.

This game has so many stupid moments that make me reload or rage quit. The latest was after a large difficult fight where I saved some gnomes - and then they attacked me just because I used Detect Thoughts during a conversation.

I mean, isn't this in the spell description?

A fight can be easy in tactician or hard in explorer. It all depends on the INSANE RNG we have in battles. That's the problem: there's no dungeon master to spice things up or smooth RNG, it's pure luck. Your characters have much less options in fights compared to DOS2, which makes RNG much more noticeable.

Larian either fundamentally doesn't understand D&D, or hates it. My guess is the latter, and they'd rather go back to making DoS games.

However, I'm not sure Larian is good at designing combat encounters at all, since I played DoS and hated combat in that game so much I quit in tbe early game and never finished it. I hated it so much I never touched DoS 2 and I was extremely hesitant to pick up BG3, fearing too much DoS DNA would make it's way over (explosive barrels and excessive elemental surfaces being the worst offenders, but there are other issues).

I was right, the DoS/DoS2 mechanics leave far too big of an imprint on BG3, and Larian constantly shows their disdain and contempt for D&D, however BG3 does show massive improvements by virtue of being forced to resemble D&D.

The most impressive thing about BG3 is the detail in this world, all of the things to see and discover, all the paths you can follow.

Combat is it's worst aspect, and the story/plot the second worst. I tend to play it only to find those "hidden gems", whether they be secret rooms, interesting side quests and characters, or strange builds that somehow work.

In other words, everything except the main attractions. Fortunately, that's like 80% of the game.

Well, for me DOS 2 combat was one of the best RPG combats I've played. The way you could turn even the worst luck strikes into winning strikes with good tactics and using your brain was top. I've played BG2, NWN and NWN2, and DOS 2 had FAR better combat for me. BG3 would improve it's combat with more chances for the characters to actually do stuff.

But combat is a minor thing in this game. 90% of the game is RPGing around. And I don't find the story bad at all.

DOS 2 was CRPG and didn't suffer from this. NWN and NWN2 had more ways around bad RNG. Same for BG2.

Don't worry, even WoTC hates D&D.

They don't hate D&D. They love money. And they think that pampering the lowest denominator will give them more cash
