Not everyone can be a part of the club.
I guess the pillow sleepers will have to settle for mage hand action.
Cheers.
Probably not a conspiracy, just a lazy or money saving expedient.
Met alor of Drow then?
Remarkably, it's totally true - Minthara DOES have a male face. It is actually one of the drow male faces from the character creator, and I have seen male NPCs in game (including non-drow) with this exact face.
Here's an example of a male PC with this face:

I've had concerns about Minthara before - her deep masculine voice was off-putting, and her face, though regular, had this certain ungraceful quality which stopped it from being "beautiful". An uncanny valley effect of some sort. Now it seems her face is actually a male face. Combined with her voice, this makes her so man-like that even Karlach seems more feminine by comparison.
I am not sure if it's a deliberate decision by Larian, but after all this other ♥♥♥♥ they've pulled I wouldn't put it past them to actually try passing off a masculine character as a "female". Challenging gender boundaries or whatever.
Bottom line, this screwed-up agenda is ruining a great game. I remember the BG2/TOB romance with Viconia: she had a very strong personality, but at the same time possessed actual feminine beauty, and her voice actress was one of the greatest voice actresses of all times, Grey DeLisle, famous for playing alluring, seductive, yet strong and passionate characters (like Azula from Avatar). Going from Viconia to Minthara is an incredible step back and disappointment for all us drow-lovers.
Even more, since Shadowheart's romance is for some reason only for good playthroughs (she's a cleric of Shar FFS! why does she only fall for the good guys?), that means those of us playing evil have either the monstrous and creepy Laezel (I still shudder remembering the sex scene with her, she was so ugly naked I felt revulsion) or the man-like Minthara with the deep voice and the male face. Why couldn't they ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ give us a pretty girl to romance? Meanwhile the gays and the girls get hunks like Halsin, Astarion and Gale, all conventionally handsome, non-monstrous and full-on male. It's ridiculous.
Considering just how much effort Larian poured into companions, I do not for one moment believe that they would actually hand-wave using a male face model for a female companion. That, as well as the deep, rough masculine voice, could not have been anything but a conscious decision on Larian's part.
The question may be if it was due to Larian wanting a more "aggressive" evil drow vibe, or indeed some gender-policy messaging. The fist option seems just stupid, they already have an humongous aggressive female Barbarian, making another companion literally male-looking and male-sounding would just be silly. So yeah, to me the second option seems more realistic, unfortunately.
Oh yeah, that's another thing. Minthara is male-looking and male-sounding (in gender-culture terms, perhaps "male-presenting" is apt), but that is only half of the picture. The other half is how dominant she is. And sure, she's a drow female, they are supposed to be dominant... unless you can out-dominate them. Which should be possible for the player character, especially those literally specialising in domination and intimidation. But there's no such option, she is just "making you her property". Laezel's the same, but at least with her you can "get on top" if you're Dragonborn (somewhere there's a joke about gith females and dragons). With Minthara, it almost seems as if Larian wanted to emasculate the player characters by making them sexually submit to a male-presenting figure. Even though the romance was supposed to be heterosexual.
So, in the end the only actual feminine female heterosexual romance is with Shadowheart. And she will not romance anyone who disagrees with liberal migration politics (and yes, the "tiefling refugee crisis" is 100% a reference to real world illegal migrants, in the middle-ages there was no such concept and the druids would have been considered fully within rights to protect themselves from the devil-spawn).
All this crap is so tiring, and really undermines an otherwise amazing game.
