What does this mean exactly? We have no idea yet. I gather that dialogue dealing with said deity or pact will no longer be present because they don't have it anymore, but they will still be treated as a cleric or warlock.
Yes. But it might seem odd when Shadowheart for example, mentions her training as a cleric, if you respec her to a warlock. :P
...and they will magically flip that narrative to seamlessly drop in any one of the other 11 classes you might respect her to?
Does that make one bit of sense?!
I see this much more simply. Larian is letting you de-couple an origin character story from her 'role' in that story for the purposes of you (the human behind a computer) having more fun jigsaw puzzling your party to maximize your experience through the game.
You realize how absurd it would be to expect Larian to do backflips to cover for all the ways you *might* respec an origin character. Instead, they'll 99% likely just stick with their main story as if you never changed their class.
If Larian NOT doing those backflips breaks immersion for you, I'll tip my cap to how high your expectations are. In that case, just don't respec that character.

The way I understand it is, for example, if you respec Wyll from warlock to sorcerer, you will still get a visit from his warlock patron. So you can respec companions, but it can seem weird at times in dialog, cutscenes, etc
The game gives you the option to break that if you wish and either multiclass them as something else on top of it or possibly respec them, but their story isn't going to magically change with that.
This is kind of what I was saying many months ago. You can't tie a story so close to what a character is, then give players the option to alter what they are and not having it come off weird to some people. I know it's a video game and won't freak out crying about "MY IMMERSION!!!!!" so I honestly don't care, but the mechanic is basically what I expected it to be given where we started.
