wait, no stats rolling?
that's a main part of character randomisation for unique playthrough, and has been in the franchise since the start, why not include it in the latest game? its fundamentally part of dungeons and dragons replay-ability for same class runs.

Rolling for stats is not "fundamentally part of dungeons and dragons", it's an optional rule that is actively recommended against by the player's handbook for dungeons and dragons.
no it's not, and no they don't. It's still the main system in 5e, and ultimately best for pure role playing(ie, to intentionally curb meta gamers) and/or for new players if the DM doesn't want to deal with them all sitting there for 40 mins on their phones looking up perfect builds. Now, for more experienced players and/or groups who want to meta/power game and who already have the numbers well in mind, that's when this system shines, imho. Just case curious, in the rulebook the alternate method is "VARIANT: CUSTOMISING ABILITY SCORES", pg 13 of PHB in my hot little hands right now.

Yea, not stat roll on release.
Maybe will be added later, since this feature was considered for inclusion, just didnt make the final cut

Considering people would use stuff like this: https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/10937/utility-ee-autoroller

I feel stats rolling is pretty much obsolete. Point Buy allows for a better game balance.

Because Stats rolling is unfun in a PC game....

You simply roll for 20-40min strait, until you get the best possible outcome, and start with a OP Character on stats.

I dunno why, but yes, there is no rolling. But I'm sure a stat modifier will be one of the first mods after full release.

Just wait for based Modders to make our traditional outlet fun again.

Yeh, they also did not roll the dice in front of the DM for 1h to get max in all attributes XDD

New system:
You roll once and that is what you get.

Don`t like it? Buy new copy and try again ;D

Literally 0 point to having it in PC game.

Wouldn't be surprised if it gets modded in pretty quick. Heck, modders could even do what should be an even easier mod of letting you pick whatever you want your stats to be. Then you could just roll your own real dice and then set them to what you rolled.

Eh, just use Cheat Engine or whatever and edit your stats to your liking.
Super_ Jul 26, 2023 @ 12:26pm
If you want random stats, you can still roll 4d6 drop, just adjust the numbers at the end so it works with point buy.
BenRichards843 Jul 26, 2023 @ 12:28pm
Because I'm just going to re-roll 1000 times until I get at least 3 18s.....Then edit my file with a hex editor for the rest.

I’m confused by people’s lack of self-control. If you want to rolls your stats, pick up a die and roll that ♥♥♥♥, then put the number

Probably because rolling for stats is kind of stupid.

If you roll the stats before making your character, then you're in a situation where you feel obligated to build your character around your rolls.

If you roll for stats after making your character, then you run the risk of getting very crap results and thus ruining your entire character concept.

I personally prefer to go with Point Buy, but Standard Array is also a preferable alternative to randomly gambling your character's attributes.

Let's be honest: Rolling for stats was dumb as hell in BG1-2. What is the gameplay value of sitting at your computer clicking "reroll" until you get the stats you want? People would roll for HOURS back in the day to get a good spread, it was absurd. Now, BG1-2 weighted the actual benefit of your stats to the top end of each, rather than the incremental bonuses found in 3e and onwards, so this made a certain amount of sense for BG1-2, where any warrior who didn't have 18/18/18 starting strength/dex/con was leaving significant power on the table. But we don't need that in 5e.

Point Buy normalizes the power level of a level 1 PC, which makes balancing much easier (and more fun) for the DM/Developer in tabletop/video games. I appreciate that I'm about to play a game curated for that level of power in my character. It makes sense to me that devs wouldn't want to balance their game around maxed-out behemoths that stat rolling would enable, and I'm strongly of the opinion that devs shouldn't enable options that they aren't proud to have in their product.
