How is build viability in this game?
On a scale from 1 to Pathfinder: Kingmaker, how lenient is this game when it comes to builds? I like getting inspiration for specific characters and potential multiclassing from reading the forums, but for my first playthrough I like winging it and just picking what I want, is that possible without completely screwing myself over?

I'm only asking about the game in it's current state, I'm sure build viability is gonna look different after release with multiclassing but I'll worry about that when it happens.

Since the max lvl is 5, you can't do much and literally anything works

Oh, I didn't realize the max level was this low currently. Thanks for the quick answer.

DnD5 isn't really knowed for its flexibility in character progress or class progress.

A Paladin has ALL the abilities a Paladin is supposed to have, no matter your subclass choice.

This ain't Path of Exile nor D2 or Grim Dawn.

BUT, there are meaningfull choices you can make at key moments in your progress to make a character that is not like the others, via backgrounds, Feats, gear and spell choices and off course Race.

Normaly there is No concept of retconning your character in DnD, when you made a choice, its definitive.

Now in a more recent DnD book(Tasha's Cauldron of Everything), they introduced a way to "retcon" a character, usually its limited to the subclass and its tied to a quest etc( depending on the DM's decision), not sure if Larian is gonna offer such option in BG3.

It is pretty difficult overall in d&d5e to build a character that doesn't work at all. Sure, some are better, some are worse, but you usually have to put some effort into coming up with something that doesn't work.
Not saying inexperienced players haven't build bad characters at all, but it's comparably rare to other systems. As long as you are willing to read a bit and put some thought into it you'll most likely be fine with whatever you build.

Max level at release is 12, but I agree with the sentiment.

Fair enough, my oversight, sorry.

i have made some terrible builds and put terrible restrictions on my characters, it did get a bit iffy occasionally but i made it through, so as long as you aren't intentionally trying to ruin your character like me you should be able to get through fine, there is also a story mode at full release so.

The only way in 5e to screw yourself over is usually to purposely not invest in your class' primary stats.

Like if you pumped nothing but Wisdom and Charisma as a Fighter for no reason, or ignored Charisma entirely on a Sorcerer.

Just watching Panel from hell.

They confirmed that Retconning your Class is an option, need to speak to a Specila NPC at camp wich will allow you to remake your choices if you feel like you made a mistake or doesn't like it.

Larian been the best as usual

Wonder if it is going to be the old bone-y boy that already offers some services.

Well they just announced you will be able to completely reroll your character ingame so build anyway you want and experiment.

You would be hard pressed to create a build that was abysmally awful. The only one I can remember was someone building a warlock and not taking Eldritch Blast, that would be a rough playthrough.
