also you are better off putting this in suggestions or larians official BG3 forums so they have a higher chance of finding it.
You must whip it
Before the harpy sings her song
You must whip it
However, it might make more sense in a non-1st person action game like BG3 since a whip can be driven by animations rather than a physics engine.
Still, it takes more work to implement compared to other types of weapons. So, it's not surprising it hasn't yet appeared in the game.
If you can animate a flail, you can animate a whip...
Whips are generally considered to be one of the worst weapons in D&D (along with the blowgun) and are hard to make effective.
The reach property is really interesting though, and can provide some value to some niche builds. I imagine Larian's special weapon attacks could make them more interesting too (knock someone prone?)
To be specific, a long whip would need a much higher number of bones than a flail would to make it look curved rather than angled. And a more number of bones means more work to model, animate and optimise.
Of course Whips have poor damage. That's why they're used as a tool for discipline, rather than execution. Do you think slavers would use the whip on their prisoners, if they inflicted the same level of damage as a dagger, or a sword? With most civilian NPC's only having 6 HP, you'd probably kill them in one lash!
Well, of course, but damage isn't always the only thing you need in combat.
Like, I already mentioned the reach aspect which is kind of cool for Rogues to get a melee reach weapon that is also finesse, but there's also the silent aspect of the whip, which is highly contextual and works better at the tabletop than it does in a video game, but maybe Larian can find a way to make that work.
They could also add some magical whips that could add value to the weapon as well.
Honestly, I hope they do add them - as I would love to make a whip/torch wielding rogue or ranger.
I remember playing Neverwinter Nights, and enchanting my whips with Fire and Acid damage, just to play up the sadism a bit more! ;-)
Nice! A serrated whip would be cool as well...
