Is Friends a forbidden spell now?
Zevlor keeps 'seeing' me cast a forbidden spell when Friends wears off after the goblin fight at the gate. I want to kill him because it's so annoying. And to add salt to this annoying cut, it keeps happening over and over again at the merchant. lol

Yeah, counterintuitively, you shouldn't use Friends spell on anyone you actually want to be friends with. After the spell wears off, the target knows you used magic on them and seems you in less favorable light or becomes hostile.

Good rule of thumb, only use Friends on targets you don't think you will be seeing after using the spell.

Fun fact: code legal of waterdeep (a form of written law) explicitly say that magic influence other people's mind is criminal offense

If you get caught, you will be jailed or fine up to 1000gp. (Depends who you use it on)

Why would you even use it on a friendly, its literally mind control, did you think they'd not know?

It's a spell that gives advantage is social rolls. It helps, particularly if you have bad Charisma. Earlier patches, when I used it there were no problems with using Friends. It's use is for social rolls. Which you can use the spell over and over again.

As of now, if you are caught to talk your way out of it. So it's a never ending loop of,
1) Use Friends on social roll,
2) Beat Social Check,
3) Walk away,
4) Friends spell wears off,
5) Get caught/accused,
6)Try to talk your way out of it (social roll, use Friends).

@Everyone Thank you for confirming what should have been obvious. I appreciate it. I see that I have to be more discreet, and not cheese my way through social rolls. lol

It tells you that using Friends against people will be considered an inappropriate act and they'll dislike it.

I don't remember that in earlier patches, but it also may not have been enforced until now. Either way, I need to adapt. :stein:

read the spell description.

"Once the spell ends, the creature knows it was Charmed and might accuse the spellcaster."

this spell is good if you use it against someone that you dont see them again or you intend to kill them soon. so you try to get as much info as possible before killing it.

if the world allow any people cast charm spell without consequence, the world will be in chaos.

Good advice for any player. hehe

Yeah, Shadowheart went from really liking me, to hating me for using it. Actually glad that it has consequences now.

I would rule that using magic to convince somebody you're best friends, only to kill them afterward is undoubtedly an 'evil' course of action.

I think it's an overall worthless spell. or rather, a highly situational spell not worth the slot. Right up there with that spell where you mark the target for an advantage on your next attack.

Friends is a great spell to use in dialog checks with goblins, since you really don't care that much if they become hostile towards you afterward. Just use it to bully them into giving you what you want.

well, it wasn't there in early patches... And people rightfully pointed that it should have been, because the spell Friend without any drawback is basically an exploit.

Really getting sick of all these rules lawyers demanding the game be made progressively harder, just because they lack the self control to avoid using these so called exploits.

It's because of them that we lost the art of 'Barrelmancy!'
