Is this another nostalgia thread?

Also, Horus did nothing wrong.

"to end...like this?!"

Irenicus sure made that series. He gave BG2 an amazingly well thought out villain to fight. Plus with Bodhi one we could just outright hate. A perfect combo.

Feel like obligated due to my DP to include Ducat(at start, if skim over occupation which he wasn't alone in doing, mostly just a patriot, and father but literally driven insane by someones death, and what happens to his people) in this discussion, and *drum roll* this fine character from TNG: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Madred (he delights in having powers over others because he was a poor orphan who never had any in his life before the military)

Also played by David Warner, the voice actor for Irenicus.

The dude tried to become a god by draining the life force from the tree of life. Which is heavily implied that it would have disastrous consequences for the entirety of the elven race.

And he tried to do this... twice...

Irenicus was so obsessed with becoming a god, that he didn't care if he had to sacrifice the lives of his entire species in order to achieve that goal. The Seldarine were right to strip him of everything that made him elven, he clearly had no attachment to it to begin with.

Irenicus was actually a character someone played as at BioWare in their own D&D campaign. Part of why he was so well written is because they knew him inside and out before they even made the game.

it wasn't just his character it was everything the narative, the scenes they did the quests that still hold up even today... the voice acting. Btw David Warner who did the voice just died last month, Rip.

Even Bg 3 has a hard time getting close to it all... With all that money and technology.

SO sadly we gonna have to wait abit longer cos nowdays devs always overthink everyhing especely the story narrative..

Jon was trying to revive his wife when the elves rejected his proposal to tap into the power of the tree of life to revive her he went and tried anyway with the help of his sister and they were both striped of what makes em elves making them hollow inside (not literally) and cast out.

The need drove them a bit mad but the plan changed only In that they needed to regain what was “stolen” from them before continuing the original plan. Jon used scorcery and alchemy to dull the need and to try to gain back what he could and his sister went the way of the vampire to do that.

Then after many years of many failed experiments including cloning, wish spells, dryads and so many other things the start of the bhaal prophecy led him to notice us and try to steal our godhood from us but first had to truly activate it. He did steal it from imoen and then used that power to launch a attack on the tree of life to take its powers as well killing the elves and then destroying the elven pantheon thereby getting his revenge and gaining the power he needed to bring her back to him.

All in all a very tragic villain and his love tale. Very Shakespearean.

At least this is what I more or less recall from my many many playthroughs and I may have a few details here and there wrong but this is the overall gist of it.

And the other bhaal spawn in bg 1 and throne want the godhood and power part except the monk guy who just wanted to kill the other spawn and then himself so the power can be properly removed from the world. And your brother wanted a kingdom of his own as well as the power of I recall correctly.

The elves were right to reject his request. There are plenty of clerics who can revive the dead, without draining energy from a mythical god tree to do so.

Also, the elves are technically immortal. When they die, they just reincarnate as new elves again. They also get to relive memories of their past lives during their Trance. So I don't know what his big deal was?

Personally, i'm a fan of Gaunter O' Dimm(Witcher 3) or the Stranger( Red Dead Redemption) type characters as villains. Villains that our character are powerless against for the most part, and whose nature is incomprehensible, and that get the fan base discussing who or what they are for years.

Not really a fan of sympathetic villains, or saturday morning cartoon villians.

Wait, where the heck are you getting this information from? I've played the game more times than I can remember. Even still have the original hard disc copies, and I don't remember anything in there about Jon trying to revive some dead wife, or using the tree to do so.

It's outright explicitly stated that Irenicus and the elven queen were in love with each other. It's also stated that it was Bodhi who was responsible for leading him down the path of corruption that he eventually fell into.

Irenicus was punished for trying to drain the tree to make himself a god, a form of sacrilege so great, that it would have inflicted catastrophic damage upon the entirety of the elven people. If by some miracle they had managed to survive the experience, it's implied that ALL elves would have been stripped of their connection to the Seldarine, just like Irenicus and Bodhi were.

Then, after restoring themselves with our souls, Irenicus returns to the forest and tries the exact same stunt again.

I kinda doubt it cause if they hadn't chosen David Warner for it it probably wouldn't have worked as well....I mean David was basically was one of the first gaming bad guys.

You do realize that John Irenicus was played by the same guy...David Warner as Master Control Program...

Only good news I got really...

James Ohlen is a video game designer. He was Senior Creative Director of BioWare where he worked for 22 years prior to starting the publishing company Arcanum Worlds in 2018. In 2019, Ohlen became the lead of a new internal development studio Archetype Entertainment under Wizards of the Coast to develop new intellectual property and video games for the company.
