Controversial Topic: Why Gnomes?
Not trying to crap on anyone in their roleplay endeavors
since i enjoy Roleplay quite a bit.

just wondering if any people here can tell me why do people roleplay as Gnomes?
like... Why Gnomes?

since my mates are all usually every other race, i have never met anyone who enjoys roleplaying as Gnomes or even roleplayed as one...

so im curious to know your input, if you are a gnome player
why Gnomes?

Gnomes are the true standard race. Humans are lanky freaks and halflings are just short humans. The other races are clearly novelties of various sort--forest pixies or diggers or whatever. Only Gnomes are suitable as masters of the universe and as a baseline reference. Gnomes are gnormies!

"only gnomes are sutable as masters of the universe"
Uhm sir you misspelled PENGUIN and i am offended!
Edit i would also accept red pandas as masters of the universe but naught else!

Then they give Dwarves a pass because BADASS and STRONG and BEARDS because MANLY GOOD STRONG BEST etc.

Short races like Gnomes/Goblins/Kobolds/etc. are friggin' awesome and should be an option in more games

Dwarves are MEDIUM creatures, not small. They have long been described as being "as wide as they are tall" which would be roughly 4 feet across. Their stoutness is also attributed with densely packed muscle mass, allowing them to exert the same level of brute strength as a full sized human.

Tabletop Community: why would anybody want to play a small race?

Also Tabletop Community: Wait, why aren't the Fairies tiny!?

Paizo: You guys want tiny races? *introduces Sprites*

aside from the aesthetics, gnomes have a history and culture of their own. That alone is enough to make people role play as them.

But do they?

I mean, there's a tiny handful of folk tales and myths, but even relative to most fairy tales, gnomes are actually newcomers on the scene.

Sometimes that can be a good motivator to play one as well though. Leaves more open for both the DM and PC on how to build a character. Give and take I guess.

I disagree with facts and say that they are not newcomers. There are many cultures that have "gnome" like myths. Your statement would hold more truth if you were talking about orcs, or halflings. Those came about in the 20th century.

As for playing a gnome I wouldn't unless BG3 used "Adventure League" character generation rules to let you put the primary stats into what you want. I really have no interest in wizards, or wizard subs atm.

I'd agree except D&D gnomes actually inherit a lot of mythological elf/faerie traditions (as opposed to Tolkien elves, which mostly don't)

Deep Gnomes make pretty excellent rogues. With Stone Camouflage giving advantage on stealth checks, Gnome Cunning and Superior Darkvision they can be very adept.

According to Wikipedia, the earliest gnown reference to gnomes is from the 16th century. That's relatively recently in mythological terms.

Wizard??? I play Svirfneblin but I never play wizard.
Played through the EA with Svirfneblin Barbarian, Rogue and Ranger.
Solasta have no gnomes so had to use marsh halflings and that is the only race I've used in all my playthroughs.
NW2 Svirfneblin Paladin.

Seriously there is no wrong class for a race.
I knead more GNOME power...THE BREAD HAS YET TO RISE...lack of yeast and explosions I blame this on elves!

The printing press was just invented a little bit before then. The english word Gnome was born from this book. Before that the idea of it was still around orally in other cultures. It wouldn't be far fetched to say that "The Eda" mentions Svartálfar. These beings are not tradional D&D stereotypical races, but are a blend of fantasy races of modern times.

You won't get the modern fantasy versions of D&D races until modern times, making your argument about when some word was coined. When the meaning of the coined word was about being an earth spirit. Earth spirits have been around a long time in mythology.
